To prepare for the conversation, we have compiled 16 comics by the Hivemind that you should read.

Lanzing and Kelly, also known as Hivemind, are an Eisner-nominated and New York Times bestselling writing duo known for their work that spans across television, comics, novels, podcasts, and feature films. In comics, you may have read stories they have scribed for Star Trek, Star Trek: Year Five, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, Guardians of the Galaxy, NYX, Thunderbolts: Doomstrike, Batman Beyond: Neo-Year, One Bad Day: Clayface, Gotham City Garage, Joyride, and more!

More recently the writing duo has been hard at work on Star Trek: The Last Starship, which had it’s first volume drop in trade paperback on September 8, 2026 from IDW Publishing, as well as the IDW Dark title You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive hitting shelves in October 14, and Dungeons & Dragons at Dark Horse coming November 4.

Stardate 2378: A bold new era of Star Trek begins! Three years ago, Benjamin Sisko made a courageous sacrifice that left him trapped in the dimension of the mysterious Prophets; now he’s returned to his home universe — with powerful, godlike abilities. But his omnipotence is failing when he needs it most. Someone is killing the gods, and Sisko and the motley crew of the U.S.S. Theseus will have to travel to the deepest parts of space to stop them.

But a shocking secret about Steve Rogers’ iconic shield will change the way he views the 20th century he came from — and how he chooses to fight in the 21st! Steve follows a trail of coded bread crumbs to Germany in pursuit of an elusive organization making bold and deadly moves, while Bucky Barnes’ own investigation leads him to the high rollers tables in Madripoor. Thousands of miles apart with no backup, will Steve and Bucky find what they’re looking for, or are they both in over their heads? Featuring the shocking return of the Dryad herself: Peggy Carter!

Steal a spaceship and leave Earth behind. A simple plan made much more complicated by the fascist World Government Alliance that has put the planet on lockdown underneath an artificial sky. Still, that won’t stop Uma Akkolyte, her best friend Dewydd, and their would-be-captor Catrin from embarking on a joyride unlike any other! Joyride is a gleeful mix of the thrill of exploration, the importance of friendship, and the fight against authoritarianism, with a cast of wild and gripping characters, human and alien alike!

When an act of mercy pits Kara against Luthor’s forces and even her own sister, Barbara Gordon, she flees into the “freescape,” a desert fought over by motorcycle clubs, chief among them the Gotham City Garage. These tougher-than-tough women–among them unexpected versions of Harley Quinn, Catwoman and more–quickly learn that Kara is more than she appears, even before she demonstrates superpowers that reveal her to be more than human! They may even embrace Kara as one of their own, but only if she lives long enough!

Star Trek: The Last Starship (IDW)

A Galaxy Shattered. A Legend Reborn. A New Frontier Begins. After the cataclysmic Burn brings warp travel to a standstill and shatters centuries of unity, the dream of the United Federation of Planets collapses almost overnight. Worlds are cut off. Civilizations tumble. Chaos fills the void where hope once thrived.

Out of this cosmic wreckage rises an unlikely beacon: the U.S.S. Omega a lone vessel crewed by survivors navigating a lawless, uncharted Galaxy nearly 300 years after the fall. With no Federation to guide them, they must carve out a path through the ruins — facing warlords, scavengers, and the raw unknown.

But they are not alone.

In a desperate act, the remnants of Starfleet strike a dangerous bargain with one of their oldest enemies… in order to resurrect Captain James T. Kirk. Thrust into a future where everything he fought for has crumbled, Kirk must confront a Galaxy in twilight — and decide whether he can become the symbol it needs one last time.

A sweeping epic of legacy, identity, and frontier survival, Star Trek: The Last Starship Vol. 1 launches a bold new era of Trek storytelling — where the final frontier is wilder, stranger, and more perilous than ever before. The mission isn’t over. It’s just beginning.

NYX (Marvel)

This isn’t a book about X-Men. This is a book about mutants living past the end of their world and into a new beginning. This is Ms. Marvel embracing her mutant life in the neon streets of the Lower East Side. This is Anole trying to keep his head above water. This is Wolverine in the shadows of Bushwick, protecting her own. This is Prodigy writing history as it happens — and Sophie Cuckoo finding her own way. But the news reports are bleak. The streets feel dangerous. There’s something lurking underground. Evil coming from every direction. Nevertheless, they’re determined to make it. This is mutant community. This is mutant pride. This is NYX!

Batman protects Gotham City from evil. Batman Inc. protects the rest of the known world. But what of the unknown world? What of the ancient evils in hidden tombs and forgotten tragedies from a magic-and-mad-science fueled super-heroic century?

Using his fortune, Luke Fox launches a new organization dedicated to shining light into the world’s darkest corners. His first recruit: Kate Kane, the Batwoman—who will re-embrace her military background to protect Luke’s dream and encounter every bit of strangeness the DCU has to offer.

And just wait until you meet the Third Man…or learn what universe-shattering secret they’ve discovered buried under Antarctica.

Bruce Wayne has died, and it’s left Terry McGuiness on his own taking on the mantle of Batman. Left with limited resources, Terry must face a new state-of-the-art A.I. that has emerged in a Neo-Gotham that has no faith in Batman. Even with all of that, Terry will have to face off against his old adversary, The Jokerz, and look to Barbara Gordon for support. Without Bruce in his ear, can Terry McGuiness become the protector that Neo-Gotham needs?

One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were torn apart — their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own. Now they ride the space lanes of a lawless corner of the galaxy, trying to outrun their tragedy. Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven? Caught in the middle of a civil war, those who were once Guardians face a battle that was lost from the start. Because they’re about to find themselves face-to-face with their old ally Groot — and he’s not the friend they remember! Where Groot goes, Rocket won’t be far behind — but he’s not happy to see the Guardians! Where has he been all this time? What’s happened to him? And can the team ever recover?

While brave knights and dangerous monsters wage endless war, business is booming for Dr. Jakob Eyes, a traveling physician whose arcane remedies are the closest thing to magic the world knows. These gruesome miracles are only stepping stones for Dr. Eyes’ ultimate ungodly goal: to overcome death itself.

Children are going missing and being swallowed by the city’s old bones. Batman Beyond will have to go underground, led by a mysterious splicer named Kyle the Catboi, to find the children and confront the city’s buried sins.

What happened to the green of the city? What happened to magic? And what villains never left old Gotham?

Doom took over the world — and Bucky Barnes helped him do it. To atone for his unwitting role in Doom’s triumph, Bucky assembles a team with one goal: burn it all down. But when Bucky’s saboteurs — including Black Widow and Songbird — launch a no-holds-barred campaign to tear Doom’s Empire apart, the newfound emperor of Earth decides to prove that revolution ends in blood. Ghost Rider ’44, Sharon Carter, U.S.Agent and the Midnight Angels join the action — but standing in the way of the Thunderbolts are…the Thunderbolts?! Who will win in the battle of new vs. old? And just what does Doom have planned if he can get his hands on Bucky?

The time traveler called Kang the Conqueror has led many lives across many eras. He has been a pharaoh, a villain and a warlord of the spaceways – even, on rare occasions, a hero. Across all timelines, one fact seemed absolute: Time means nothing to Kang. But the truth about the Conqueror is much more complex! Kang is caught in an endless cycle of creation and destruction, dictated by time and previously unseen by any but the Conqueror himself. A cycle that, once revealed, could finally explain the enigma that is Kang.

It begins and ends with an old and broken Kang sending his younger self down a dark path. But is there any hope that he can change the tragic fate of his great love, Ravonna Renslayer, and find his way to a better future?

LOS ANGELES, CA – Blumhouse, the innovative horror storytelling studio behind recent hits like Obsession and Five Nights at Freddy’s, is partnering with the award-winning IDW Publishing to bring even more spine-tingling terror to the best-selling comic book horror imprint IDW Dark.

The petrifying partnership tears into comic shops late 2027 with the fan-favorite The Purge. Eisner Award-winning writer Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns, TMNT: Shredder) and acclaimed artist Juan José Ryp (Wolverine: Blood Hunt, Ghost Rider: Vengeance Forever) brings the dystopian and compelling premise – a world in which any and all crime, especially murder, is legal one night a year – to the pages of the comics with a gripping new chapter that features all the action, tension, and emotion that fans crave from the thrilling franchise. Following The Purge will be more unforgettable hits from Blumhouse making their comic book debuts with all-new stories, including M3GAN and New York Times best-selling writer Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash, The Revival) taking a stab at Happy Death Day.

A darkly comedic slasher with a sci-fi twist, Happy Death Day made an undeniable impact on pop culture with its mystery about a murder victim being forced to relive the day of their death over and over again to discover the shocking truth and unmask their killer.

Packed with chills and twisted humor with rich themes, the beloved sci-fi horror M3GAN is the saga of an advanced A.I. doll which takes its good-intentioned programming to extreme and bloody measures. Additional details about these titles and more from the acclaimed Blumhouse library of fear will be revealed at a later date.

“Quality storytelling experiences are always our top priority at IDW, so partnering with Blumhouse to expand our horror imprint was truly a no-brainer decision,” said Davidi Jonas, IDW CEO. “Working with Blumhouse to continue exploring the compelling potential of their modern classics within the pages of the comics is a tremendous honor and the creative conversations have been exciting. I can’t wait for fans to feast their eyes on these stories.”

Just like buying tickets before going to the movie theater to guarantee a good seat, fans should contact a comic shop near them to pre-order The Purge to make sure they don’t miss out on getting their copies.

When humans disappears and robots flourish, one robot dares to go beyond the walls to find the humans who might still be alive in the sci-fi adventure of the year, where WALL-E meets Fallout.

Humanity is extinct and all that remains are the robots who once helped us. The robots that once helped us are happier now, doing their work without human interference. But not Abraham Lincoln. Abe is haunted by the thought that there must be something more out there — that somewhere, human beings might still exist. After nearly getting killed, he’s determined to wander the Earth until he finds them… or gets recycled trying. Join him on an epic quest to learn who lives beyond the walls, why no one ever comes back, and what it means to be truly alive.

Artist Andy MacDonald (Wonder Woman, Doctor Strange), and writers Mark Elijah Rosenberg (Approaching The Unknown, Year Million) and Matthew Rosenberg (We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) bring you an ongoing story about finding purpose, holding onto hope, and really lonely robots.

Writing duo Matthew Rosenberg & Mark Elijah Rosenberg and artist Andy MacDonald find humanity in a cold and robotic future where humans are seemingly long gone in If Destruction Be Our Lot. A science-fiction adventure where a lonely robot Abraham Lincoln searches for a new purpose in a post-apocalyptic world that is fighting back. With unanswered questions abound, this first volume is a must-read, but makes you want so much more…in a good way. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

Comics are a quiet medium of visual storytelling, the noise and sound of the story is something you have to use your imagination for as you read a story. This is why stories told in the A Quiet Place universe seem to resonate so well on the pages of a comic. In A Quiet Place: Rising Tides, writer Declan Shalvey and artist Luke Sparrow take us to a new location with a fresh storyline of fear, but also an emotional core that speaks volumes without much speaking.

When a young woman named Grace tracks her estranged father to a run-down houseboat in the Florida Keys, she expects disappointment, resentment, maybe even closure. Instead, the entire world ends.

Now stranded in the aftermath of the invasion that shattered civilization, she and her sick, aging father cling to survival on the open water — the only space safe from the creatures who attack at the sound of a single breath. But his oxygen is running low, supplies are disappearing quickly, and the deadly predators circling the shoreline are learning fast.

And on top of it all, a hurricane is coming.

This style of story seems fitting for a writer who started his comic career as an artist. Shalvey has the mindset of an artist, allowing the artwork itself to speak with little script to go along with it. Knowing how artwork flows gave Declan the ability to craft story in the silence that has meaning and is also terrifying. Not to mention he packs a lot into this debut issue.

A Quiet Place: Rising Tides is set in an all-new location with new faces, but brings along with it the fear felt from the original films and first series at IDW Dark. Not only does Grace have to face her estranged father and all that comes along with this, but now she has to tackle the sudden appearance of terrifying creatures from another planet at the same time. Oh, also add to all of this a hurricane forming offshore. Facing her father and finally being able to talk with this person who has been absent from her life, but now not being allowed to speak without possible deathly consequences, what luck.

Shalvey definitely has the talent needed to deliver a mostly silent comic story where the sounds and speaking have a larger impact and resonates beyond the panel. This is not an easy task and handled it extremely well. But this is more than just a new A Quiet Place story, its a tale of raw emotion, family dynamics and drama, in addition to the terrifying natural disaster brewing and terrifying creatures waiting for a slip-up. A emotional and horrifying tale that happens to be set within the parameters set by the A Quiet Place franchise, just how it should be. This allows for fans of the films as well as those new to the franchise to enjoy this story without feeling lost.

Yes, does Shalvey craft a story that has momentum in silence, of course, but it’s also the fantastic illustrations by Luke Sparrow and colors by Colin Craker that have this story moving from panel to panel. In a story where silence is key, the artwork has to speak loudly. Sparrow uses unique angles and imagery to provide context and push the story along with perfection. Craker’s choice in colors from brighter colors as well as pinkish-orange tones for the flashbacks and dark, dreary colors for the present allows us readers to know where exactly we are in the timeline and adds to the dread felt by the world coming to an end.

Every comic takes a team to craft and create, but some are more evident than others. A Quiet Place: Rising Tides falls squarely in the latter. Shalvey’s storytelling, Sparrow’s illustrations, and Craker’s color choices are key, but what about the impact felt by outstanding lettering, again in a story mostly absent of words. Jodie Troutman uses the sparring sound effects and lettering to land the impact felt by certain moments as well as add motion to some still imagery. Lettering can be an unsung hero of a story and A Quiet Place: Rising Tides is just such story.

A Quiet Place: Rising Tides speaks loudly even when needing silence in its debut issue. Writer Declan Shalvey, artist Luke Sparrow, colorist Colin Craker, and letterer Jodie Troutman deliver on a comic that fits squarely in the A Quiet Place lore, but also stands on its own. A Quiet Place: Rising Tides turns silence into its greatest strength with an emotionally powerful and terrifying tale.

A Quiet Place: Rising Tides #1 hits local comic shops on November 18, 2026 (FOC: October 12) from IDW Dark imprint at IDW Publishing.

Our 300th episode drops on September 23, 2026 featuring Kevin Smith, as we countdown to 300, we wanted to be sure to say thank you to a few special people who have been integral to our continued success. While each and every guest, listener, agent, press contact, marketing director, and so on are important to us, a few really fought for us along the way.

While we have hosted a number of authors, writers, artists, actors, filmmakers, and more, we have mainly been a home to those who create comics. Therefore we have been in close contact with a few comic book publishers and their press and marketing teams. In addition to those I are going to discuss below, I wanted to thank Kelly Then for the amazing help along the way, David Harper for setting the example of how to produce an amazing comic book podcast, Gibran Graham for early help reviewing films and guidance in the book market, my wife Taylor Soderberg for always being willing to make sure I have the time to record no matter what time of day or night and being my first cheerleader when something amazing happens, and those who I am spacing on at the moment.

One of our biggest supporters, and the person to help us commandeer our 300th episode guest, Kevin Smith, has been publicist Kaitlyn Nash from Dark Horse. Nash has been one of the first people I reach out to when looking for a new comic creator for the podcast. Kaitlyn is always excited to help and offers up their knowledge of who would work best for us and what I can expect on the horizon. Nash has been able to connect us to some of our favorite comic creators over the years and has never made us feel like we are asking too much. I truly do not think we would be at episode 300 without the help of Kaitlyn and hope that we can work closely together for the next 300 episodes.

One that really has been an immense help over the years has been IDW Publishing’s Senior Publicity Manager Gregg Katzman. When it makes the most sense to host a guest from IDW’s direct market single issues, Gregg is always there to help us make the connection. With this we have become a trusted spot for said guests as well as for reviews of upcoming issues. Katzman has even been gracious enough to join the podcast to discuss the world of publicity at IDW and comics in general. With great kindness, Gregg is always will to discuss what we can do to make sure those out there know about what comics are on the horizon.

Another under the IDW Publishing umbrella is IDW Publishing’s Book Publicist Kim Estlund. Similar to Katzman, Estlund has been able to wrangle those looking to help promote their collected edition. Kim has been there to communicate and facilitate guests in the book market of IDW and Top Shelf Productions. An amazingly kind and wonderful individual, Kim is always willing to make the connection that matters.

It’s been amazing to work directly with some publishers, but sometimes you need that connection and friend who helps with a number of various publishers and independent creators. Melissa Meszaros, owner of Don’t Hide PR, has been a huge help in discussing comics with creators from Mad Cave Studios, Image Comics, and more. Melissa has been a wonderful friend and always willing to see what fits best. Like the previous three, we would not be at 300 without Meszaros’ tremendous help and we appreciate all she has done.

More recently I have been lucky to work with Margot Wood, VP of Book Market Sales at Image Comics, for the help in connecting me to some of the great creators at Image Comics. Discussing the collected edition of series with guests is a more recently addition to the podcast and Margot has been a big help with that. Always willing to accommodate and work with my annoyance along the way. It’s been great to add a few Image Comics creators to the list of guests and for the most part that is Margot’s doing.

Of course, this Countdown to 300: Special Thanks wouldn’t be complete without a special thanks to my original co-host and the co-founder of the Capes and Tights Podcast, Adam Morrisette. We launched the podcast in 2021 and Adam was along for the ride from the start, but due to some uncontrollable circumstances had to move back on, halfway across the country. It became more and more difficult to make things work remotely, so Morrisette gracious bowed away and allowed the podcast to blossom. I know I have said we wouldn’t be at 300 without these people, but it’s with 100% certainty we wouldn’t be here without Adam and his friendship. We keep trying to figure out a good time for Adam to guest host with me once again, and I am determined to make it happen eventually. Until then, thank you Adam for all you did to help launch this podcast.

Now, the final person I am going to gush about is my friend, my daughter’s Godfather, and owner of Galactic Comics and Collectibles, Paul Eaton. It was early on in the podcast when I asked Eaton if he’d be willing to do some various episodes with me. Over the years these episodes have become more regular and morphed into our weird movie reviews and annual comic wrap-ups. Paul has been a true friend on the podcast and behind-the-scenes, another cheerleader for our success as well as a practical co-host of the program. Eaton has stayed around through some truly horrible films and is always game for the next one, even if his wife Liz continues to say “what crap is Justin having you watch this time?” Outside of myself, Paul has been the most common face on the podcast and that is something I do not take for granted. Again, there is no Capes and Tights Podcast without him and hope he is a big part of it moving forward.

Thats a lot of brown-nosing with my friends, colleagues, and guests, but hell it was worth it. No single person is why we are here today, but truly a perfect storm of all I have mentioned and those who I have not. In the end the BIGGEST thanks I need to make is to you, the listener, the reader, the follower, the supporter, the critic. If no one listened, I would still show up, but thankful people tune in every week and pushes me to make it better, with more fun guests, more stupid movies, and more from the world of comics, books, movies, tv, and beyond. This is BY-FAR not the end, but as we are about to hit 300, it seemed like a good time to be thankful. I hear the playoff music starting, I will leave you with this…

THANK YOU!

As new comic day quickly approaches it can be sometimes difficult to decide which of the new comics hitting the shelves at your local comic shop to grab. Do not worry, we are here to help. This week we preview four titles that standout from the crowd including Any Given Smile #1, Star Trek #1, and more!

While we are not the official voice of your decision, we want to help guide you in the right direction for comics releasing September 23, 2026.

Any Given Smile #1

Writer: Stephanie Williams
Artist: Pablo Collar
Publisher: IDW Publishing / IDW Dark

January 1995. All eyes are on the American Arena League football championship game in St. Augustine, Florida. The Sharks gear up for the most significant event in the AAL’s 20-year history, and Maximillian Dupree — their sudden-star backup quarterback — is feeling the pressure from his teammates, his fans, and his debts to the city’s gambling underworld. A string of suicides hits the community hard, drawing a desperate sports journalist to examine their connection to the big game. No one can trust anything they see as a mind-bending entity and its frightful visions threaten their payouts, their sanity, and their lives…

Based on the critically acclaimed Smile film franchise, writer Stephanie Williams (Nubia, Roots of Madness) and GLAAD Media Award–winning artist Pablo Collar (Avengers Academy) are sure to run fear across the goal line. Time to place your bets. Kickoff approaches for a Sunday ritual that will have you ready to win… or die smiling.

Any Given Smile makes sports horrifying, in just the right way. Stephanie Williams and Pablo M. Collar raise the bar on the Smile universe with a football horror filled with tension, a sense of dread, and down right creepiness that is felt on nearly every page. Williams and Collar carve out their own corner of the Smile Universe with Any Given Smile, a downright terrifying addition to the franchise. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

Star Trek #1

Writer: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Dennis Menheere
Publisher: IDW Publishing

Their mission is new. Their legacy is not.

From the pen of fan-favorite writer Christopher Cantwell (Star Trek: Defiant, Star Trek: Red Shirts) and the brush of psychedelic standout Dennis Menheere (Etheres, Little Nightmares) comes the launch of an all-new flagship… and this time, we’re busting out of the four quadrants.

The Enterprise-G is on a desperate mission beyond the known Galaxy to relocate the dying Avuran people when its crew finds a perfect new home in a region of unknown space called the Epsilon Corridor. Three pristine Class-M worlds — the Trinity — await the refugees. No signs of civilization. No detectable threats. A colonist’s dream. But the dream fractures fast.

When Captain Seven of Nine and her divided, fast-tracked crew begin exploring the Trinity, they uncover disturbing contradictions: vanished structures, inexplicable artifacts, time skips, and evidence of a presence Starfleet’s century-old probes never detected. Each world houses a different ecosystem, different physics problems, and different secrets — as if they’ve been curated… or quarantined. But from who? Or what?

The first arc of Star Trek delivers a prestige, mystery-driven, high-stakes psychological thriller of an opening salvo — new worlds, new species, new existential threats — anchored by Seven, Jack, and Crash La Forge fighting to keep the mission together as the Galaxy’s oldest ghosts awaken.

Star Trek #1 had me questioning why I haven’t been reading the franchise’s main stories over the years. Christoper Cantwell brings his Star Trek expertise in crafting a story that is action-packed and emotionally resonate, while Dennis Menheere illustrates chaotic scenes that prove the unknown is not to be messed with. The premiere issue of Star Trek is a fitting way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the franchise. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

This first issue will be loaded with bonus materials including behind the scenes peeks, newly conducted interviews, essays, cartoons, and more!

It might have been four years between issues, but writer Chris Condon and artist Jacob Phillips have not skipped a beat with That Texas Blood: Hell Comes to Allison Ranch. Full of familiar faces in familiar places, this new arc in the That Texas Blood series is perfect for those looking to jump into the series, but also a nod to those who have read the 20 issues prior. That Texas Blood: Hell Comes to Allison Ranch is a fantastic return to Ambrose County that reminds us exactly why this series has been so special from the start. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

We are now only a single episode away from 300 here at the Capes and Tights Podcast. As we get ready to celebrate this milestone accomplishment, we decided to look back at some moments that stood out for us along the way. Each and every guest means the world to us, but let’s highlight some of the key episodes of the first 300.

Let’s kick is off by saying there are six highlights and those are the frequent guests, those on four or more times, of the podcast, which we focused on in our first Countdown to 300 post. Not to mention the other guests who have been on three times as well. We have had a ton of fun over the first 300, so here are just some of the hits.

Our First Real Guest – Dana Snyder

Only nine episodes into the podcast, we were able to sit down with voice actor Dana Snyder for Episode 10. The circumstances were unique and of course, in our infancy, were not fully prepared for the conversation.

Snyder was a guest at the Bangor Comic & Ton Con (now Queen City Expo), which in 2021 took place at the Bangor Mall. While at the event his agent called to let him know that he was asked to record for a significant role, but would have to do so pretty much immediately. Myself and co-founder Adam Morrisette were in attendance doing a few live recordings from the shell of a former GameStop. BCTC owners, Jay Cochran and Will Hesketh, approached Adam and Justin, who had the equipment, to ask if we would lend a hand and help Snyder record his voice overs.

This entire experience is one that we somewhat go over on Episode 10: Dana Snyder, but is also been on the back burner to discuss once more in a future episode. But after helping Snyder with his voice over, Dana graciously agreed to be a guest and the following day setup with us in that GameStop to record our first actual guest. October 2021. A big day for us and hopefully Snyder opts to return in the future to discuss this all over again with a bit more detail.

WATCH or LISTEN

Is This Real Now? – Eliza Clark

Okay, so we lucked out with right place, right time for getting Dana Snyder to be a guest on the Capes and Tights Podcast, but it was only four episodes later on Episode 14 when we were able to secure a discussion with screenwriter Eliza Clark.

Co-founder Adam Morrisette and I had discussed the first three episodes of the television adaptation of Y: The Last Man on a bonus episode in mid-September which caught the attention of showrunner and executive producer Eliza Clark. Shooting our shot, we reached out and Eliza graciously accepted. Again, not seasoned at all, we fumbled through the episode but it was that moment forward that we knew we could likely secure great guests within the comics and pop culture medium and this could be something.

Sadly, Y: The Last Man was cancelled not long after our episode aired. However, Clark, who has also worked on Extant, Animal Kingdom, The Killing, Rubicon, and more, returned to the podcast in 2023 to discuss the WGA Writers Strike. Eliza, you are always welcome to come back and discuss whatever floats your boat. As an early guest, you are forever welcome! Maybe we can chat Durango?

WATCH or LISTEN

Somehow Booked Skottie Young

If anyone knows me, they know I am a huge Skottie Young fan with five tattoos on my left arm to prove it. So, from the start it was always a goal of mine to host Skottie on the podcast at some point and to do so after just over 100 episodes, joining us for Episode 101, was a serious highlight.

I have learned a lot over the past five years of podcasting and one of those things is that sometimes a creator is MUCH more of a benefit to you as a guest than you are to them. Young would be one of those guests. While Skottie is always promoting variant covers and more, his work pretty much sells itself and with his tremendous following does need this little podcast to help him promote his stuff. So, in the end, this was a time of a creator looking out for the little guys and tossing us a bone so I could chat with a comic book idol of mine.

Our goal is to have Skottie return to the podcast in the future, but only time will tell.

Iconic Creators – Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev

Of course when you start a podcast you have an unrealistic bucket list of possible guests, but it’s when you are over 100 episodes when the list starts to become more of a reality. On my bucket list from the start was Brian Michael Bendis, one of my favorite comic writers, if not my all-time favorite. Working with the fine folks over at Dark Horse (yes, looking at you Kaitlyn), I was able to sit down for a discussion with Bendis for Episode 141. Bonus, another legend also showed up…Alex Maleev.

Bendis is one of the reasons I read comics today. Falling in love with his Marvel work in the early 2000s, falling in love all over again with his House of M and Secret Invasion stories, and then continue to love his independent work over the years. Getting the chance to sit down with a living legend such as Bendis was an opportunity I will never forget. Discussing books such as Masterpiece at Dark Horse, in addition to touching on his work at Marvel was just a fitting experience that I hope I get to do again.

Getting to cross off Bendis from our bucket list was an accomplishment that just pushed me further into attempting to book more of my favorites in the world of comics. The addition of the super talented Maleev was icing on the cake. It’s after this episode when I set sights on crossing the next big name off the list and the next, and the next.

Tim Jacobus Discusses My Childhood Frights

In the failed attempt to setup a nice Goosebumps Week, I was successfully able to discuss the iconic books from my childhood with one of the key contributors, Tim Jacobus on Episode 204. Sometimes in the attempt to get one guest, you end up with a guest that you may enjoy the conversation with even more and with this episode that was just the case.

Jacobus is the legendary artist behind the iconic covers of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps. From the books such as Welcome to Dead House, The Haunted Mask, One Day at HorrorLand, The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, and more, Tim was what originally sold us kids on wanting to read these terrifying tales. When getting them at the Scholastic Book Fair or reading these books under my covers I never in a million years did I think I would have an amazing conversation with the visionary cover artist. We know, no matter how the story was on the inside of a Goosebumps book, the art on the front grabbed your attention!

Following the episode I had to get a sketch of Ghost Beach cover to add to the collection of artwork, comics, movies and more in the Capes and Tights studio and is one of my favorite pieces of art. Tim, you are always welcome to come back!

Legendary Actor and Writer – Tim Blake Nelson

Sometimes you have to wait for the perfect time to host a guest on your podcast, this was the exact way I was able to have a discussion with actor and writer Tim Blake Nelson on Episode 260.

Nelson is a fan-favorite actor in such films as O Brother, where art thou?, Holes, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Brave New World, and more. Which made him a person I would love to chat with, discuss Marvel Cinematic Universe and more. However, it wasn’t until 2025 that I knew he was also an accomplished author, this made me want to chat with him even more.

Getting in touch with some bigger, more famous guests, is still tough even approaching 300 episodes. It takes the right time, right place to do such a thing. Excited to read his novel Superhero, I was able to host Tim to discuss the release of his book and squeeze in a couple questions about working on Marvel films and more. It was a nice blend of writing and acting discussion and allowed me to talk with such a talented person.

Whether its the next book or the next film, Tim Blake Nelson is always welcome to join us!

Eight Billion Reasons Why – Charles Soule and Ryan Browne

There are guests that have a vast history of work to why the reason I would love to chat with them, plus those who are only recently getting started. It’s the former and the latter when it came to discussing stories with Charles Soule and Ryan Browne on Episode 113. Soule has been one of my favorite authors and comic writers over the years and Browne’s illustrations always strike a chord with me. The perfect combination to discuss Eight Billion Genies.

It was no secret in 2022-2023, that Eight Billion Genies was not only of my favorite comics, but a consensus around the comic community as well. The eight-issue story dealing with wishes and the repercussions of said wishes was fascinating on so many levels, wonderfully written and excellently illustrated. Luckily, after talking with Browne about joining the podcast, he was able to convince Soule to also join us. Fittingly, the two were getting together to discuss their next project together, unbeknownst at the time, that would eventually be Lucky Devils. So, one of the rare times we talk to two guests in the same location.

You can see why these two work so well together as they riffed off each other and discussed their crafts in ways that really surprised me. Getting the chance to discuss one of your favorite comics with two of your favorite creators is always a blessing and this was no different. Browne return with another fellow favorite creator Kyle Starks for Episode 174, but still trying to convince Soule to return again in the future.

Okay, so I guess its not Eight Billion Reasons Why, but still.

Patrick Horvath Discusses My Favorite Comics of Recent Years

Following up on getting the creator of one of your favorite comic series in recent years to discuss said comic with you…Patrick Horvath joined us for Episode 202, then came back for Episode 232, and again for Episode 290. All to discuss Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees and following up with Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring.

When I first read Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees I was blown away, but so was a ton of readers and speculators. The comic blew up. People wanted everything from the series and, at the time, I figure the same would go for the creator. It wasn’t even on my radar at the moment, he was too hot at the moment and was going to be swarmed by media. Thankfully, IDW Publishing was able to make things work, so much so that we discussed the single issues and had Patrick return only 30 episodes later to discuss the trade and the possibility of a sequel. After the fantastic time we had, I wasn’t going to leave it there and when the first issue of Rite of Spring was about to drop, Horvath came back!

Now, IDW Publishing and Horvath have announced a third series in the title, so Patrick you are now required to return in 2027 to discuss Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: The Summer and the Fall. It’s just tradition at this point.

The Unreleased Fantastic Four Movie with Alex Hyde-White

Again, sometimes the right current marketing plan helps you get a random, yet wild guest. Example, Alex Hyde-White‘s appearance on Episode 83. During the build-up to the publication of his book In the Volume: My Life in Film and TV, Hyde-White was gracious enough to join the Capes and Tights Podcast to discuss his life as well as the unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four film.

Alex starred as Dr. Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic in the first adaptation of the Fantastic Four in a feature film, which was set to release in the mid-1990s but never hit screens outside of a bootlegged copies around the world. This opportunity fell into my lap and I am forever grateful for it. This Fantastic Four film is iconic and legendary around the world of superhero movies, the story behind its creation and the mystery behind why it was never released. Getting to chat with one of the actors who was onset is another level of podcasting. Hyde-White has been around Hollywood for years and his book was a wonderful trip through time, but talking Fantastic Four was a blast.

Funny enough, in preparation for the conversation I had Paul Eaton of Galactic Comics and Collectibles watch the 1994 Fantastic Four film and discuss it on a podcast episode. Eaton was unaware I was about to talk with Alex and was very critical of the film, which he rightfully should be, but was none too happy with me after letting him know Alex was up next! Oh well, we got the most honest discussion out of Paul.’

Koontz" width="300" height="300" />One of my all-time favorite comics is Revival by writer Tim Seeley and artist Mike Norton. Of course I was pumped when they announced the show had been optioned for a television adaptation, but what I never guessed is that I would be discussing it with the creator and showrunner, Aaron B. Koontz on Episode 235.

I had previously had the chance to discuss comics with Seeley, but never was able to discuss much of Revival. So when the show approached, I had figured I would reach out to Tim to see if he wanted to join. Then, I said…why not see if Koontz would discuss the show, figuring like other times with these situations that I would get no response or the person of interest would be too busy. Not the case, Aaron was gracious enough to join us on the podcast and discuss the ins-and-outs of making such a fantastic first season.

Now, Tim you are always welcome to discuss Revival with me, bring along Norton as well, but really Aaron you are welcome to join us again when we EVENTUALLY get word of a second season.

Writer: Tim Seely, Jordan Blum
Artist: Scott Koblish
Publisher: Dark Horse

The Big One, the earthquake to end all earthquakes, has finally struck Los Angeles. The government decides not to rebuild and the city becomes a no man’s land for those that refuse to leave it. But hey, you can’t beat the weather.

Five years later Ester Blanco, a down on her luck former P.I., is willing to do anything to escape the City of Angels. She believes she’s found her ticket out when a desperate father hires her to solve a missing person’s case in a city where a third of the population is already missing. Instead, the trail of this lost girl leads Ester to uncover a dark web of cults, conspiracy and corruption that threatens every Angeleno that stayed behind.

The Big Shakedown is a sunbaked LA noir in the vein of Chinatown and The Long Goodbye and set in the post-apocalyptic remains of the most beloved/hated city in the world. From writers Jordan Blum (Minor Threats), Tim Seeley (Local Man) and artist Scott Koblish (The Despicable Deadpool) comes a pulpy tale of murder, destruction and traffic.

The Big Shakedown‘s premiere issue is a gritty post-natural disaster mystery with more unanswered questions and mystery than those answered. Tim Seeley. Jordan Blum, and Scott Koblish deliver a fresh tale with an edge and mystery that pulls you into a dark and frightening Los Angeles that is even hard for the reader to escape. The Big Shakedown is a vivid, character-driven mystery that turns a shattered Los Angeles into an intriguing and frightening noir setting. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

Based on Tim Burton’s classic Sleepy Hollow (1999) the story continues in this graphic novel: A thrilling tale of buried truths, decaying bodies, and rotting, vengeful gods.

The Headless Horseman hasn’t plagued Sleepy Hollow for 15 years now, but unbeknownst to the residents of the drowsy valley, a deeper evil lurks in the roots of the town, and it will stop at nothing to quench its thirst for blood.

Ichabod Crane is a man of science and, despite his indisputable brush with the supernatural, has built a name for himself debunking claims of the occult across the world. However, when he receives a frantic letter urging him to return to Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod must reunite with his now estranged love, Katrina Van Tassel, to investigate a string of strange, unexplainable murders–—residents who died tangled in roots, decorated in flowers, or blanketed in soil. The pair unearth tales of possessed townsfolk and the Tree of the Dead and together they will uncover the truth of Sleepy Hollow’s origins and the roots that connect them all.

Return to Sleepy Hollow is a great addition to the world of Sleepy Hollow. It’s an elegant and haunting expansion on the gothic classic. Casey Gilly and Savanna Mayer respect the classic story while carving their own dark path along the way. Return to Sleepy Hollow is truly for the longtime fans and newcomers to the lore alike. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review of the first issue
