The Big Shakedown #1

Writer: Tim Seely, Jordan Blum
Artist: Scott Koblish

The Big One, the earthquake to end all earthquakes, has finally struck Los Angeles. The government decides not to rebuild and the city becomes a no man’s land for those that refuse to leave it. But hey, you can’t beat the weather.

Five years later Ester Blanco, a down on her luck former P.I., is willing to do anything to escape the City of Angels. She believes she’s found her ticket out when a desperate father hires her to solve a missing person’s case in a city where a third of the population is already missing. Instead, the trail of this lost girl leads Ester to uncover a dark web of cults, conspiracy and corruption that threatens every Angeleno that stayed behind.

The Big Shakedown is a sunbaked LA noir in the vein of Chinatown and The Long Goodbye and set in the post-apocalyptic remains of the most beloved/hated city in the world. From writers Jordan Blum (Minor Threats), Tim Seeley (Local Man) and artist Scott Koblish (The Despicable Deadpool) comes a pulpy tale of murder, destruction and traffic.

The Big Shakedown‘s premiere issue is a gritty post-natural disaster mystery with more unanswered questions and mystery than those answered. Tim Seeley. Jordan Blum, and Scott Koblish deliver a fresh tale with an edge and mystery that pulls you into a dark and frightening Los Angeles that is even hard for the reader to escape. The Big Shakedown is a vivid, character-driven mystery that turns a shattered Los Angeles into an intriguing and frightening noir setting. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

Return to Sleepy Hollow TP

Writer: Casey Gilly
Artist: Savanna Mayer
Publisher: IDW Publishing / IDW Dark

Based on Tim Burton’s classic Sleepy Hollow (1999) the story continues in this graphic novel: A thrilling tale of buried truths, decaying bodies, and rotting, vengeful gods.

The Headless Horseman hasn’t plagued Sleepy Hollow for 15 years now, but unbeknownst to the residents of the drowsy valley, a deeper evil lurks in the roots of the town, and it will stop at nothing to quench its thirst for blood.

Ichabod Crane is a man of science and, despite his indisputable brush with the supernatural, has built a name for himself debunking claims of the occult across the world. However, when he receives a frantic letter urging him to return to Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod must reunite with his now estranged love, Katrina Van Tassel, to investigate a string of strange, unexplainable murders–—residents who died tangled in roots, decorated in flowers, or blanketed in soil. The pair unearth tales of possessed townsfolk and the Tree of the Dead and together they will uncover the truth of Sleepy Hollow’s origins and the roots that connect them all.

Return to Sleepy Hollow is a great addition to the world of Sleepy Hollow. It’s an elegant and haunting expansion on the gothic classic. Casey Gilly and Savanna Mayer respect the classic story while carving their own dark path along the way. Return to Sleepy Hollow is truly for the longtime fans and newcomers to the lore alike. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review of the first issue

I love a good story that is not far off from what possibly could happen, like in The Big Shakedown. Catastrophic earthquakes hitting Los Angeles with a government who opts not to help rebuild, yeah these days that doesn’t sound far fetched. All-star writing duo of Tim Seeley & Jordan Blum, along with artist Scott Koblish, craft a fresh take on a post-apocalyptic style tale, where those left behind have to fend for themselves and have more questions than answers.

Post-apocalyptic, well more so just post-natural disaster in this case, stories are not groundbreaking (see what I did there), but Seeley and Blum carve their own path with The Big Shakedown. A major city, one of the United States most-major cities, basically crumbles to nothing and the government opts to just abandon and move on with life, letting those left behind to attempt to survive without aid is not only a great take on this concept, but also terrifying in of itself. Thinking no one is there to support you after tragedy is sad and horrible, yet as I mentioned at the top not far fetched these days.

Seeley and Blum put forth a strong female lead that doesn’t take shit for anyone. One that is holding on by a thread in this desolate and frightening aftermath, while trying to escape and move on with life, only for shit to continue to pile on. Now, having a chance to make a few extra dollars to help with said escape, goes back to her roots of investigation to solve a mystery. Something that is all the more difficult now, find a missing person in a city of missing people. While, the aftermath of the earthquake to end all quakes was intriguing premise, its the character-driven story that had me connected to the pages.

The Big Shakedown is an LA noir with that gritty edge you’d expect. As the first issue moves along you get a sense of Ester as our protagonist and her fight for survival in a destroyed city, but also there are more questions that answers, even as she works toward solving the mystery of the missing person. The debut issue ends on a cliffhanger that had me eagerly wondering what will happen next?

Koblish brings this gritty, yet playful artwork style that fits well in the decimated City of Angels. You can truly feel each characters individual personalities jump from the page and the vibe of the destroyed city is evident in the imagery. A rough terrain and even rougher experience for these characters is well visualized and perfectly matches up with Seeley and Blum’s story.

The Big Shakedown‘s premiere issue is a gritty post-natural disaster mystery with more unanswered questions and mystery than those answered.
The Big Shakedown #1 hits local comic shops on September 16, 2026 from Dark Horse.

As someone who reads mainly fiction, a few non-fiction books about a subject, movie, or book that falls within my wheelhouse always grabs my attention, such is why Still Floating: 40 Years of Pennywise fell into my lap. Tom Deady joins together a cast of contributors to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stephen King’s IT in fitting fashion, telling stories and more about the iconic horror novel that shaped most of our childhoods. An absolutely treasure of a collection that hand me both reminiscing and eagerly awaiting my next read or even viewing of IT.

In September of 1986, Stephen King published IT, a sprawling 1,138 page novel that he later dubbed in an interview his “final exam on horror.” IT follows the lives of seven friends who battle an ageless evil in their small hometown of Derry, Maine. Twenty-seven years later, they reunite to face their childhood fears when they realize IT wasn’t dead after all.

IT holds a special place in my life for many reasons, the first being that the book is fantastic. The others being I was born in 1986 (the year the novel was released), when I moved to Bangor in the mid-1990s I lived only a block away from King’s West Broadway home, and returned to the area after moving away for 10 years, driving by the house every week on the way to my local comic shop. Yes, many of these are just reasons why I should love all of King’s books, but IT is one that really stays with you as you grow older.

While I would’ve jumped right into the deep end of a book author solely by Deady revolving around IT, I am almost more glad that Tom was able to get together an eclectic group of people to share their thoughts, opinions, stories, and analysis of the 40-year-old King story. This gives a bit more wide-range of thought behind what has made IT stand the test of time and still relevant today.

Still Floating: 40 Years of Pennywise is not just people gushing over how amazing the book is, well there is some of that, the book features varying stories of how much the book and Stephen King mean to these people and why it works as a story. We have chapters dedicated to Pennywise the villain, clowns as a whole, balloons, iconography, Derry/Bangor, the multiple adaptations, relation to Stranger Things, and even the tougher to swallow subjects of racism, the fictionalized version of real-life hate crimes against a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and THAT scene.

Each contributor wonderfully found their entry point into telling their story behind why IT has been around for so long and is celebrating a 40th birthday and not just another year on the shelf. Chapters from Michael Rowe, Tamika Thompson, and Jonathan Janz really struck chords with me and made me think a bit deeper into the social issues King didn’t shy away from when crafting the story of IT and how this classic horror novel has formed almost a guideline to making horror stories today such as Stranger Things. While each subject might not be ground shaking in sense of meaningful impact, they each have a good reason to be a part of this collection and goes to show how many people have been shaped by this book, being only a sample of the people impacted by IT.

In addition to the essays featured in Still Floating: 40 Years of Pennywise, we also get a few interviews such as with King collaborator and bestselling author Richard Chizmar, and one from basically my neighbors with Jamie Tinker and Jennifer Millar of SK Tours. Yes, Derry is a fictional town, but having it based on your backyard with special places to visit throughout that have a connection to the horrors within IT is truly something special. People travel from all over the world to visit Bangor because of what King has written in books such as IT and I try not to take advantage of being able to live right in the center of it.

The physical copy is always a great choice, but truthfully the narration by Sara Sheckells & Shaun Taylor-Corbett for the audiobook was superb. I have been a fan of Tayl0r-Corbett ever since his narration of The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, and along with Sheckells perfectly captures the voice of each contributor to this book.

I opened Still Floating: 40 Years of Pennywise because I thought it would be fun to get a chance to relive IT alongside others for the 40th Anniversary, but what I got was so much more. Tom Deady brings together a great group of contributors, who celebrate the anniversary, but also gave me a new look into what makes IT so special in the first place. While reading the 1986 horror before diving into this book might be a good idea, it almost feels more impact to read Still Floating: 40 Years of Pennywise and then give the 1,138 page novel glance with new eyes.

Those who contributed to this collection include the already mentioned Rowe, Thompson, Janz, Chizmar, Tinker & Millar, as well as Scott Bradley, Christa Carmen, Jeff C. Carter, Glenn Chadbourne, Charlene Cocrane, Rebecca Cuthbert, Victoria Dalpe, Lauren Daniels, Kristin Dearborn, Brian Freeman, Scott Goudsward, Larry Hinkle, Dave Jeffery, Paul Michael Kane, Gwendolyn Kiste, John Langan, Jonathan Lees, Hans-Ake Lilja, Bracken MacLeod, Neil McRobert, Scotty Milder, Lee Murray, Vincent Neyt, Nick Roberts, Lindy Ryan, Bev Vincent, Kris Webster, and Mercedes Yardley.

There are those books that I am highly anticipating and those which I stumble across when searching for my next read. The Windowman by Christopher Goffard falls into the latter category and I am all the more happy for it. The Windowman was an unsettling, yet intriguing read where the characters shined in each and every chapter.

With a series of occult slayings, a killer known as “the Windowman” terrorizes Southern California and sends the media into overdrive.

Damon Midnight goes down for the crimes, but a botched prosecution sets him free. As he starts a new life in an idyllic suburb, he vanishes—and three intertwining narratives explore his public and private faces.

Annabelle Picolini is the Orange County schoolteacher who loves him. Harlan Crumb is the tormented prosecutor who is hunting him. Blaire Belmont is the hapless method actor who wants to be him—at least long enough for his breakout movie role. As they orbit around the mystery of Damon Midnight, clues to his fate begin to emerge.

Goffard crafts a story that takes nods from the Night Stalker case featuring Richard Ramirez, but definitely stands on its own. What is, in the end, a fascinating manhunt for a serial killer is also a wonderful character study of those surrounding the killer himself, including his wife (who he married after the killings), a district attorney, a detective, an actor, and a detective all on the search for something. With each chapter unfolding part of their story which also is really Damon Midnight’s (the killer) story.

Each character is carry some sort of weight due to the actions of Midnight over the years. Annabelle, his wife, would do anything for him, even if things have been different since he was set free. You can feel her pain, but also the grief that builds as the days pass with him missing. Blaire, the actor, is studding for a role as the serial killer, but is also not all there himself. So diving deep into the mind of a killer is likely not the best for him. Not to mention those in law enforcement and the lawyer’s who fought for his conviction, only to have him set free and the torment this must cause them.

Typically I am not one for a story with a ton of different characters, but Goffard chooses a variety of characters that are distinctively different and carry their own stories along with the center story. It’s one of those books that I can connect with the characters, not fully on a personal level as I don’t know any serial killers (that I know of), but in a way as I feel for their struggles.

The Windowman is a gripping character-driven thriller that carries a lot of weight. Author Christopher Goffard crafts a story with multiple points-of-view during a difficult time with a serial killer at the center. The Windowman isn’t just as casual read as it might torment even you after putting it down. More proof to not put your blinders on when looking for a new read.

The Windowman hits bookstores everywhere on December 8, 2026 from Crooked Lane Books.

Any story that takes horror cinema into a horror novel has my attention, add in Hailey Piper at the keyboard, you have me hooked. Piper takes the cursed film horror trope and puts her own unique spin on it in The Movie Doesn’t End the Way We Want. Just when I thought it was one thing, the book took a turn into something else, in the best possible way.

In November 1994, three girls visit their local movie theater to see an obscure film. Only one of them is ever seen again.

Thirty years later, Val McQueen has never forgotten the day she lost her little sister and best friend, but she’s closed the curtain on it, certain she’s moved on despite her parents’ resentment and hounding by true crime enthusiasts.

That is until a stranger’s murder brings it all screaming back—a terror she’s tried to tell herself is only a movie. Enlisting the help of cinephile and former classmate Roxie de la Fontaine to find the film, Val soon realizes that hers is not the only pursuit. Someone, or something involved with the movie is on the hunt, too…

… For the girl who got away all those years ago.

The simple idea of watching a film and something horrible happening to you, in this case Val’s sister and friend disappearing, is truly frightening. But I didn’t think of what goes on around such horrifying moment and the aftermath. Such as the grief felt by those left behind, such as Val, and those parents who have lost their child. Not to mention the blame and distance it can cause between someone like Val and her parents. The weight this adds to a story is so heavy that made the events to take place thirty years later hit even harder.

I love that horror is a genre and that it can take all shapes and forms when telling such stories, but truly love when horror cinema finds its way into horror novels. The use watching a rare horror film grabs me each and every time, as I feel like I would be that person. A limited showing of a movie I had never heard of, what a fun time. What wouldn’t be me, is watching it thirty years later or watching the film while researching the horror that took place when someone else watched it. Sorry, but no thanks. This is when you want to yell at the pages, STOP, don’t do it!

What also had me hooked was the mystery surrounding the film, the research into hits history thirty years later, and how our memory can work differently over the years. Was there actually a movie, if not, how come people are talking about it elsewhere, but why is there no information about it on the internet. It’s a plot point I have seen only a few times over the years, but one that I absolutely love. Are you crazy, or did you actually see the film where your sister and friend vanished. The actual horrifying event, but also the horror of what is reality.

There is so much more I want to dive into here with The Movie Doesn’t End the Way We Want, but will spoil what turned out to be a large surprise from me in the end. What is important is that Piper crafts a story that is horrifying, but one that is also grief-filled, and emotional. A horror story that has so many levels, and one that will take you by surprise.

The Movie Doesn’t End the Way We Want is a horrifying, yet emotional, grief-filled tale that surprised me. Hailey Piper takes a familiar trope and makes it her own while scaring us along the way. The Movie Doesn’t End the Way We Want will not make you disappear, but what’s inside just might.

The Movie Doesn’t End the Way We Want hits bookstores everywhere on September 15, 2026 from Titan Books.

The increased use of artificial intelligence has grown exponentially over the past few years, which would make sense why there would be more books based around what might be the result of such use. Mason Coile loves to tease us about the horrifying consequences of the use of AI in everyday life, such as self driving cars in Driven, a terrifying locked-room mystery that won’t make you any more likely to run to your favorite dealership for a car that can drive itself.

Jamie Newcross wants to disappear. His wife and baby girl have abandoned him, and his only wish is to retreat from society. Because, as it turns out, Jamie Newcross is also being haunted. Every house, condo, or apartment he moves into is plagued with ghosts—at the end of the bed or when pulling back the shower curtain. He hasn’t been able to sleep in weeks.

But Jamie has a plan. He posts queries online and finds someone wanting to get rid of their Lion—the world’s most advanced self-driving car—a sleek, private, contained vessel that is one-hundred percent safe. Or so he thought.

Because now, Jamie has woken up to the Lion speeding down a dark road, the hood is dented—wait, is that blood?—and the car will not respond, or stop, or let him out. As the miles rack up and Jamie becomes increasingly complicit in his car’s choices, he’s forced to face the tragic past he has kept buried.

As I select which books I can read in advance of publication, I tend to steer towards those that I feel will really pull me in. The world of AI is everywhere around us and while I love the features such as lane-assist and adaptive cruise control in my car, I am still not at the point I want to get in a self driving vehicle. So push together locked-room mystery and the horrors that could happen with an artificial intelligence and you have me enticed. Not to mention, how many locked-door mysteries do you know of that take place in a car?

I expected a story where an AI had a mind of its own, where the car would drive itself to places you weren’t expecting or at the risk of one’s life. What I didn’t expect was the emotional core Driven has and how it played a major part in the story. Yes, Driven features so terrifying moments where you are at the edge-of-your-set (pun-intended), but its not at all what I was expecting by the time I hit the last page. In a good way.

Coile builds a story with a few twists and turns that made things all the more interesting. A tale that is filled with terror, but also those where you truly care for the future of Jamie Newcross, who has really had some back luck over the years. Things are not all that they seem in his new, well used, Lion car and what takes place along the way had me surprised. The author manages to squeeze a lot of fear, thrill, terror, and emotional impact into only a few pages. A story that really packs a punch.

Driven is a fast-paced (again, pun-intended) thrilling mystery will have you reading a breakneck speeds (you get the point by now). Mason Coile blends the world of self-driving cars, artificial intelligence, and terror into a fresh new story that was hard to put down. You’ll want to put your seatbelt on for this one, because this Lion car has a mind of it’s own.

Driven hits bookstores everywhere on September 8, 2026 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons. The audiobook, narrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins, is available via Libro.fm!

The life of an influencer seems horrifying on its own, but when putting your life on the internet for thousands of fans is not the most horrifying thing, it’s even more terrifying. Brian Asman crafts a frightening influencer horror with #VanDeath where simple choices and mistakes can cost you your life.

Morgan and Jasper are the couple everyone wants to be: beautiful, successful, and constantly mobile. Their #VanLife content has captured the hearts and minds of a million online followers, who all “smash that subscribe button” to watch as the loving couple documents their outdoor adventures.

But it’s all a sham. Their relationship is on the rocks. Jasper doesn’t know Morgan’s trolling the dating apps. Morgan doesn’t know Jasper blew all their earnings on shady crypto investments. What started as a fun way to share their love of nature has turned into a grind. Plus, they’ve also got stalkers: fans whose parasocial obsession with the couple verges on the terrifying.

When Jasper gets a contract to shoot a promo for an upstart granola company at the Ubehebe Crater, a gorgeous but remote section of Death Valley, he talks Morgan into a last-minute trip. He’s secretly hoping this trip will not only solve their financial woes but also help them reconcile. But things go wrong immediately. A mysterious black van runs them off the road. Their cameraman seems like a lunatic. And soon, they find themselves stranded in the desert, pursued by a masked killer. Can Morgan and Jasper put aside their differences long enough to survive both the killer and the desert itself?

Putting things on social media is my least favorite part of marketing anything, trying to get peoples attention to whatever you are promoting, let along make it your entire life and identity. So, the life of #VanLife social media influencer sounds horrifying on the surface. This is before having to deal with the type of people that follow you, comment about you, and even stalk you because you put your life on the internet. However, Asman takes this life and dials it up to 11 with #VanDeath.

Asman puts a couple on the teetering of epic breakdown into a position of terrifyingly having to fight off those horrors of social media influencing that have taken things a bit too far. A couple who is nearly forced into a marketing agreement to fight for their relationship and financial future, only for it to all go horribly wrong along the way.

All the terrifying moments that take place in #VanDeath are balanced by holding onto the hope of saving their relationship and being able to grow as a couple. This hope made everything happening worth fight and had me rooting for the couple. Each have their own failures and secrets, but in the end surviving a few nights in Death Valley while being terrorized is something worth fighting for.

Asman builds suspense with a few twists and turns, as well as a few red herrings that will have you thinking you have figured it out, only to have the story go a new direction. The mystery behind who was in black van could be multiple people, and by the time all is revealed I still had no idea who it was. The blend of mystery and horror was wonderful.

The lives of Morgan and Jasper were only enhanced by reading this #VanDeath via both physical and audiobook. The narration by Joe Hempel & Zura Johnson put us in the drivers seat and immersed us in the horrors, while picking up a physical copy is always a great thing as well.

#VanDeath is a terrifying trip into Death Valley where the horrors of social media influencing for one couple are the least of their worries. Brian Asman delivers a horrifying story filled with gruesome terror as well as a glimpse of hope for the future. I’ll tell you what, #VanDeath doesn’t make me want to get in a van and share my life on the internet, that’s for sure.

#VanDeath hits bookstores everywhere on September 22, 2026 from Blackstone Publishing.

The fall is a good time to jump into a new graphic novel or trade paperback, or maybe get prepared for the holiday season. But how do you decide which ones to grab? Let us help you on your journey with our 25 most anticipated graphic novels this fall!

We tend to lean towards independent and horror comics, so this list might be skewed a bit to that side of things. The list is in order of release date into local comic shops, publication dates for your favorite bookstore may come a day early or a few weeks later depending on publisher. Release dates are also subject to change.

It’s not too late to take a look at our 20 Most Anticipated Graphic Novels: Summer 2026 list.

It’s time to cue the music; it’s time to dim the lights! It’s time to get things started as the Muppets return tonight!

The show is about to begin at the famous Muppet Theatre, and the regular pre-curtain chaos has the troupe’s stalwart MC, Kermit the Frog, coming apart at the seams. In an attempt to de-stress, he settles down to read a few pages of a favorite old detective novel — only to get kayoed by an errant brick to the bean, leaving him laid out backstage as his co-stars try to coax him back to consciousness.

But unbeknownst to them, Kermit has taken up the hard-boiled mantle of his fictional hero to walk the darkened streets of Dreamland, righting wrongs and cracking cases under the concealing cover of night. Flip Minnow, P.I., has no time for song and dance — not if he’s going to solve the baffling mystery of the Snoozing Sleuth!

Legendary cartooning talent and Muppets comics veteran Roger Langridge bellies up to the drawing table once more for an all-new tale of crime and pun-ishment with The Muppets Noir!

This is a story about Ted and Sarah.

Ted, isolated and paranoid, works for a mega corporation owned by the world’s only trillionaire. He suffers from night terrors, obsessively draws the same mysterious figures again and again, all while listening to one track of music on repeat–oh, and the only “person” he ever talks to is a stray cat. His humanity is hanging by a thread. Sarah is a new arrival to the city, fighting her own demons, and her job is to remotely spy on Ted to ensure he doesn’t hurt anyone…or himself. When Ted’s mental state begins to crack, Sarah compassionately intervenes to help, and things go catastrophically wrong. Is Ted OK? mashes up the paranoid existentialism of Severance with the cosmic sci-fi of Akira while exploring what happens when the act of help goes horribly wrong.

From creator Dave Chisholm, Is Ted OK? is a spectacularly unpredictable yarn–each successive issue shatters the scope of the previous, all without losing its core: a search for human connection in an oppressive, paranoid world.
