As new comic day quickly approaches it can be sometimes difficult to decide which of the new comics hitting the shelves at your local comic shop to grab. Do not worry, we are here to help. This week we preview four titles that standout from the crowd including The Smart Division #1, Power Rangers: Green #1, and more!

While we are not the official voice of your decision, we want to help guide you in the right direction for comics releasing August 5, 2026.

The Smart Division #1

Writer: Zack Kaplan
Artist: John Pearson
Publisher: Dark Horse

A dark and modern sci-fi detective series set five minutes in the future. When a mysterious new predictive artificial intelligence program appears responsible for assisting someone in the perfect murder, a pair of unlikely investigators, a chaotic Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent, must hunt down the killer by starting the FBI’s first AI crimes division.

Creator Zack Kaplan (Kill All Immortals, Masterminds, Port of Earth) and Eisner-winning artist John Pearson (In Bloom, The Infernals, The Department of Truth) reunite for the first timesince their fan-favorite sci-fi horror series, Mindset!

The Smart Division is a fantastic science-fiction mystery that eerily could be more fact than fiction. Writer Zack Kaplan delivers a timely detective tale exploring the use of modern technology in solving crimes. However, it’s the juxtaposition of John Pearson’s elegant brush strokes that makes story rise above the rest. Kaplan and Pearson’s creativity knows no bounds and The Smart Division is proof of that. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

Chachu #1

Writer: Iman Vellani
Artist: Marianna Ignazzi
Publisher: Image Comics

1979. Leila, a 19-year-old Pakistani-Canadian girl, stands on the cusp of adulthood, eager to experience the “real world” for the first time. With a head full of Hollywood dreams and a penchant for pulp novels, she ventures to California to connect with her estranged uncle — her “Chachu” — a middle-aged, semi-retired private eye who gained brief fame after marrying the starlet he was initially hired to find. But when Chachu’s wife goes missing once again, the two are forced on an impromptu road trip to track her down — with Leila navigating young adulthood and Chachu confronting his own mortality and regrets.

Inspired by her own coming-of-age experiences in the entertainment industry, Chachu is the solo writing debut of superstar Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), a reinterpretation of the classic neo-noir private investigator story brilliantly illustrated by Marianna Ignazzi (Exquisite Corpses) and colored by Jordie Bellaire (Absolute Wonder Woman).

Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: Michele Bandini

One of the most terrifying villains in the history of comics is back—and more deadly than ever! Why is he here and what path will he take? Find out as the Shredder gets his own series!

As a dark new power rises from the shadows of New York, so does a much darker power return to the city’s streets…for revenge! Long a nemesis of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Shredder has returned forever changed by a maddening ordeal beyond imagining—a man out of time, betrayed by all around him, without the Foot Clan, and quite possibly insane. When one of his former Foot prodigies forms their own rival clan with infernal designs on New York, a recovering Shredder must quest deep into the criminal underworld, where enemies both old and new will discover what defiance will bring them at the end of the Shredder’s blades.

Collects issues #1-6 of the comic series by Dan Watters, the celebrated writer of Batman: Dark Patterns and Nightwing, with artist Michele Bandini (Batman Incorporated, Spider-Man: City at War) to tell the rags-to-revenge story of the ultimate ronin.

Dan Watters and Michele Bandini bring the legendary badass TMNT villain back in TMNT: Shredder #1, and it hits hard. With an outstanding new character design by Mateus Santolouco that both new and old fans of the character will enjoy, Oroku Saki is back for revenge and I’m all in. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review of the first issue

So when a story is pitched to me as Saw meets Willy Wonka there was no way I wasn’t going to give Night of Madness a go. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory being a classic part of my childhood and Saw one of my favorite modern horror films, Ryan Douglass taking both and mashing them was a no-brainer. Douglass gives us a terrifying, yet heartfelt horror story that embodies a lot of what I love about horror.

Mara is a horror buff whose only fond memories of her dad are bonding over movies by Jack Stanley—the producer of the eighties. Stanley’s campy slasher movies may have kept Mara’s fraught parental relationship on life support and gained a cult following, but the man himself has faded from the public eye…until he announces a contest centered around Asylum, his most terrifying film. Five teen influencers will be invited to spend the night on the fully constructed set; whoever sticks it out until morning wins a hundred thousand dollars.

Stuck in a dead-end job, Mara seriously needs that cash. She may not be a famous influencer, but there has to be a way to manufacture an online presence that will capture Stanley’s attention. With the help of her brother and best friend, Mara finds some creative solutions to her dilemma and lands herself onto the roster of the lucky chosen few by way of her engaging authenticity.

When Mara and the other contestants arrive on set, it’s a horror fan’s dream being immersed in the asylum setting, but as the night wears on, they realize the danger is more than movie magic… They’re not there to win or lose but to live or die. As Mara fights to survive, she discovers an inner ruthlessness she didn’t know she had. Just how far will she go to see the sunrise—and will she still recognize herself by the end?

Night of Madness was a book that jumped up on my advance reading for multiple reasons, the Saw and Willy Wonka comparison, but also the mention of “the production company behind Clown in a Cornfield.” Adam Cesare‘s Frendo series is one of my all-time favorites and anyone willing to promote their book using that saga will get my attention. Like Cornfield, Night of Madness is geared towards the young adult crowd, but can terrify the YA group, my 40-year-old butt, and even older. Sometimes I connect more with these stories, maybe because having to relive my teen years isn’t as jolly as some others?

The story gets going a bit slower than I had hoped or expected, mainly setting up the reason Mara is going to film this reality television show and setting the foundation. This was a bit surprising as we kinda of got the gist of the premise in the description, but was dragged out a little bit more than needed. However, when the contest got underway the shit really hit the fan and didn’t let up.

Yes, Night of Madness is filled with gruesome scenes and horrifying moments, but what Douglass created here was something more than just shock-and-awe. Ryan crafted a story that uses fear to push the book forward, but ultimately lands in an emotional and heartfelt place. The resolution was worth the frightening moments and felt even more special when I closed the book.

Mara was well crafted, being our main protagonist this is super important and done really well. Her progression from start to finish is thought out and well paced. It’s the supporting characters that I felt didn’t land as well for me. This doesn’t take away from the overall story, as Mara is the most important and gets the most page time. I would love to read more of Mara and her family’s story.

Ryan Douglass balances brutal, edge-of-your-seat terror with real emotional depth in Night of Madness. Douglass crafts a story that doesn’t just scare, it also makes you care with a protagonist worth rooting for. Night of Madness blends horror and reality television in ways that are unexpected and truly frightening.

Night of Madness hits bookstores everywhere on September 29, 2026 from Simon Pulse. The audiobook, narrated by Angel Pean, is available via Libro.fm!

NOTE: We received an advance copy of Night of Madness from the publisher. Opinions are our own.

The anticipation for The Smart Division was high, partly due to the fact I have been eagerly awaiting for the creative dream team of Zack Kaplan and John Pearson to team-up again since the release of Mindset.
When a mysterious new predictive artificial intelligence program appears responsible for assisting someone in the perfect murder, a pair of unlikely investigators, a chaotic Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent, must hunt down the killer by starting the FBI’s first AI crimes division.

The addition of modern technology in certain parts of life have been questioned since the beginning of time, but the use of artificial intelligence in some of the most important jobs lately has been scary to downright wrong. The Kaplan fingerprints are all over this comic with the writer doing what he does best, crafting a story that is entertaining, mysterious, as well as extremely timely in the world we live in.

With this debut issue, Kaplan sets the tone of the series, introduces us to some important elements, as well as the characters that make this story what it is. Some of these new characters are likable, some not so much. While technology is the core of this tale, it’s the people who opt to use it to commit crimes and ultimately attempt to solve said crimes that make the story special. By creating some relatable characters we care more about what happens.

Yes, Kaplan is a wonderful storyteller and doesn’t shy away from hot button topics, but it’s the artwork by Pearson that makes this comic a must-read. Kaplan’s technology filled story set against the imagery stunningly painted by Pearson makes each and every panel hit all the more harder. The decision to use softer imagery in a story filled with the square edges of modern technology was one that will set this story apart from the crowd. Pearson uses all the weapons in his arsenal to give us a stunning work of art. Not to mention the fantastic layouts that allow the story to move in fluid motion.

The Smart Division #1 hits local comic shops on August 5, 2026 from Dark Horse.

Comic writer Dan Watters joins the Capes and Tights Podcast for Episode 292 on July 29, 2026. To prepare for the conversation, we have compiled 13 comics by Watters you should read.

Watters is an Eisner-winning comic writer located in England who has worked on numerous projects from DC, Marvel, Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, IDW Publishing, and more. These titles include Nightwing, Destro, Detective Comics, The Six Fingers, Loki, Home Sick Pilots, Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon, Batman: Dark Patterns, and more.

Recently Dan was been writing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder and the opening chapter of The Twilight Zone for IDW Publishing, as well as M.A.S.K. for Image Comics. The trade paperbacks for TMNT: Shredder and The Twilight Zone: Stories from the Fifth Dimension hit stores on August 4 and September 1, 2026 respectively.

Nightwing (DC)

Dick Grayson joins DC’s “All In” initiative with a brand-new creative team for Nightwing. It’s not all sunshine when Blüdhaven erupts into a warzone between rival gangs fighting for the future of crime. Nightwing must push himself further than he ever has to save his home and legacy. Don’t miss this groundbreaking new era from the new creative team of writer Dan Watters and artist Dexter Soy.

Home Sick Pilots (Image)

In the summer of 1994, a haunted house walks across California. Inside is Ami, lead singer of a high school punk band-who’s been missing for weeks. How did she get there? What do these ghosts want? And does this mean the band has to break up?

Expect three-chord songs and big bloody action as Power Rangers meets The Shining (yes really), and as writer Dan Watters and artist Caspar Wijngaard (Limbo, Star Wars, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt) delve into the horrors of misspent youth.

Batman: Dark Patterns is a series of four self-contained, street-level mysteries that delve into the early days of Batman’s role in Gotham City and his healing presence within its streets.

This grounded, mystery-driven narrative evokes the rich tone and style of beloved classics such as Batman: Year One , Batman: The Long Halloween , and Batman: Hush . Penned by the talented Dan Watters and brought to life through the striking artistry of Hayden Sherman, each three-part story stands alone as a gripping detective case, shedding light on the trauma and resilience of Gotham’s citizens and its urban landscape.

The series masterfully underscores Batman’s dual identity as a methodical sleuth and a shadowy beacon of hope, skillfully steering clear of cosmic or supernatural distractions. This intentional focus reassures readers of a steadfast commitment to a more authentic, detective-driven experience, highlighting relatable mysteries that brilliantly showcase the Dark Knight as a healer cloaked in darkness.

SAN DIEGO — Today ComicBookPros released the first trailer for upcoming documentary “Bill Sienkiewicz: That Polish Guy” during their San Diego Comic-Con panel, giving fans a first look at the new project highlighting one of pop culture’s most unique and impactful artists.

Panelists Bill Sienkiewicz (The New Mutants), director Remsy Atassi (The Legend of Kingdom Come), and producer Sal Abbinanti (The Legend of Kingdom Come) discussed topics including Bill’s one-of-a-kind career and the process of making the documentary, followed by an audience Q&A. Fans in attendance received an exclusive film poster only available in person at San Diego Comic Con 2026.

“I’m incredibly excited about the documentary; it’s both humbling and nerve-wracking to see my life’s work splayed out on-screen accompanied by observations by so many of my creative heroes,” said Bill Sienkiewicz. “But more, I’m excited because the documentary discusses the obsessive need to make art,as part of the unifying human experience, a drive that defies language, place or even medium of choice. That drive is something we all share and I’m proud, in the words of the great Cormac McCarthy, to carry that fire.”

Titled after the nickname Bill received from legendary actor-director Clint Eastwood, “Bill Sienkiewicz: That Polish Guy” explores the life and career of the groundbreaking Polish-American artist. The film demonstrates Bill’s impact through interviews with industry luminaries including Vincent D’Onofrio, Kevin Smith, Peter Ramsey, Jim Lee, Denys Cowan, and many more across comics, film, and television, alongside a behind-the-scenes look at some of the iconic works that defined his career, including “Moon Knight,” “New Mutants,” “Elektra: Assassin,” and beyond.

“Bill has been incredibly influential in the comics, film, music, and beyond, and this trailer is a peek into a film that will let everyone experience the depth of his creativity and his untouchable legacy,” said producer Sal Abbinanti.

I am a sucker for a good horror story set during the holidays. The juxtaposition of what should be a jolly good time and the terrifying frights of the horrors that take place is something I cannot get enough of. ‘Twas The Night by Kevin Johnson scratches the itch with a uniquely horrifying tale set in my home-state of Maine.

You better watch out. You better not cry. It’s Christmas in the village of Yule, Maine.

In fact, it’s always Christmas in Yule. Here, Santa Claus isn’t a storybook figure. He’s an icon. A god. The villagers don’t just believe in him—they worship him. And the world is better for it. Halley Belanger hates Christmas, and she doesn’t have much love for Santa either. But when a string of child disappearances across Maine seems to spare only the village of Yule, Halley—a sharp, skeptical reporter—decides to investigate.

What she finds is a town that guards its secrets with gingerbread smiles and a snow globe sheen. Outsiders aren’t welcome. She isn’t welcome. And something sinister is keeping the Christmas spirit alive. As Halley digs deeper, she begins to uncover the horrifying truth behind Yule’s eternal cheer. Christmas comes at a grisly cost. And Santa Claus is no saint.

The Christmas tale set in the horror genre is the key reason why I picked up ‘Twas The Night, but the fact that it takes place in the fictional Maine town of Yule sealed the deal. As a Mainer I tend to get overexcited about stories taking place in my backyard, as we have a special state with a vast variety of people, towns, communities and geography that make setting stories here something unlike anywhere else. Why not a Christmas horror story that is not just a random holiday tale, but one that features the big guy himself.

We have read or seen our far share of holiday horrors, even those involving Santa, but Johnson takes this story in a fresh direction. ‘Twas The Night twists the love and affection we all feel for the big guy in red around the holiday season and takes it to a new level. The almost cult-like worshipping of Santa and the relation to a string a missing children not only is creepy, but also heartbreaking made even worse by the jolliness we all want to feel around the holidays.

When ‘Twas The Night opened, I could vividly see the Town of Yule as well as the people within that would not leave my head. As a Mainer I would hope there is actually no place in my state like Yule, but could see it like I had been there before. An atmospheric setting is what hooked me from the outset, but it’s the eerie characters within this book that had me staying around. Most of these characters are not likable, but there was something pushing me to want to know more.

‘Twas The Night is an eerie, atmospheric horror story that adds more horror to the holidays in a fresh way. Kevin Johnson comes out swinging in his debut novel with a terrifying tale of a cult-like worshipping of Santa that is has creepy as it is frightening. Johnson delivers on a chilling holiday nightmare that transforms Christmas cheer into pure dread.

‘Twas The Night hits bookstores everywhere on October 13, 2026 from William Morrow.

This standalone four-issue miniseries serves as a prequel to the Kai-Sei Era while also being perfect for fans of Godzilla: Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla (1954). Written by rising star authors Griffin Sheridan and Ethan S. Parker (Marvel Zombies, Kill Your Darlings) and illustrated by one of the best horror artists of all time, Tristan Jones (Event Horizon, Aliens), this comic experience puts you on the ground during the kaiju’s first attack. And as readers will soon discover, they’ve never seen a Godzilla attack quite like this one before…

The Horror of Godzilla #1 is exactly what the title promises, an incredibly terrifying look at the King of the Monsters through the eyes of those caught in their path. Writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan deliver one of the most unsettling Godzilla stories I have ever experienced, while Tristan Jones brings his A-game with artwork that is both impactful and horrifying. The Horror of Godzilla is one of the most frightening Godzilla stories with some of the best illustrations I have seen in recent memory, making it a strong contender for comic of the year. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

The Patron #1

Writer: Christian Ward
Artist: John Pearson
Publisher: Ignition Press

All the great artists have one thing in common… they’re dead.

A true patron of the fine arts, Mr. Cherish has dedicated his life to scouting and supporting emerging artists, launching countless unknowns from obscurity into industry superstardom. Unfortunately for these young artists, the secret to Cherish’s success is their untimely demise. Nothing makes a work of art more desirable and valuable to collectors than the passing of its creator, and Cherish has refined his ability to orchestrate spectacular tragedies without leaving a trace… before selling his dead protégés’ oeuvres for massive profits.

Painter Matty Barnes is primed to become Cherish’s next “hit” — but when the script is flipped on this latest murder, a posthumous twist calls the artist’s fate and legacy into question putting the patron’s empire in the dueling crosshairs of law enforcement and a merciless third-party connoisseur.

Writer Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness, Event Horizon) and artist John J. Pearson (Mindset, The Infernals) put their own life’s work on the page in a highbrow thriller at the bloody intersection of art and commerce! Both creators will contribute a full series of variant covers, alongside a special incentive cover on #1 by Eisner Award-winning artist Anand RK (Deicidium, The Beauty).

The Patron was a serious roller coaster of emotions, wasting no time in getting going, and hit harder than expected. Christian Ward crafts an eerie mystery filled with emotional gut punches, while John Pearon’s delivers stunning paintings that make every moment all that more enjoyable. The Patron is a blend of beauty and brutality that somehow exists on the same page and if the rest of the series is anything like this first issue, we are in for a story that could contend for comic of the year. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

HEL ON EARTH! On the farthest edges of the solar system, KNULL, GOD OF THE VOID, builds a brand-new army to destroy Earth… but HELA OF ASGARD might have gotten there first — as she makes planetfall with a legion of the galaxy’s deadliest symbiotes! Two of the most powerful evils in the galaxy are at war… and the SON OF VENOM is caught right in the middle!

Writer Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk, Mortal Thor) and Iban Coello (Imperial, Fantastic Four) — the team behind VENOM WAR — bring you a cosmic collision of evil versus evil with the good caught in the middle!

Writer: Christian Ward
Artist: Tristan Jones
Publisher: IDW Publishing

Discover what happened to the original crew of the Event Horizon in this all-new cosmic horror graphic novel set in the universe of the terrifying cult-classic film!

This original comic series serves as an official prequel to the film! The Event Horizon was a revolutionary spaceship designed for one mission: faster-than-light travel with a top-secret, experimental gravity drive. But upon activating the device, the ship journeyed across the borders of Hell itself. In a nightmarish realm of torments beyond imagining, Captain Kilpack and the crew of the Event Horizon must resist all manner of demonic forces—including Paimon, the eyeless King of Hell, and their own descents into madness and bloodlust—if they’ve any chance of escaping back to their own world.

Abandon all hope and board the Event Horizon with multiple Eisner Award winner Christian Ward (writer of Batman: City of Madness, Two-Face) and powerhouse sci-fi artist Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance, Tales of the TMNT) in this unbelievable story of the true and final fate of the original Event Horizon crew.

Event Horizon: Dark Descent is a great return to the universe, nailing the disturbing feeling and psychological horror that made the original film become a cult classic. Writer Christian Ward and artist Tristan Jones craft a brutal, unsettling and character-driven story that not only expands on the mythology of the original film, but also carves its own path. Event Horizon: Dark Descent is a wonderful return to cosmic horror that honors the film’s legacy while being a nightmare all its own. Plus, all the more reason to rewatch the classic film over again. – CLICK HERE to read the entire review

Not only does Adam Cesare excel at telling haunted tales in cornfields, but excels at crafting horror stories with nostalgic feelings that also terrify. Zero Lives Remaining, originally released in 2016 is back with a new edition filled with fun survival horror blending indie film vibes with ghost-in-the-machine frights.

It’s 1989, and Robby Asaro is making FunCave Arcade’s pizzas when his sleeve is caught on the pizza oven conveyor belt, and he dies a brutal death. But that wasn’t the end for Robby, who is now a friendly ghost watching over the gamers of the arcade.

Fast forward to 2014, and this retro video arcade is still going strong as teens flock to both the new games on the main floor and the old classics on the second. What they don’t know is that FunCave is now haunted by the man who died there in the 1980s. Robby cares about the regulars, especially Tiffany Park. When Robby tries to protect Tiffany from a bully, his first kill has unintended consequences as he absorbs his victim’s hate and rage. He can’t help what he does next as more bodies pile up and the patrons of the arcade are trapped inside.

It’s exciting to see Cesare re-release a few of my favorite of his older stories including Video Night and now Zero Lives Remaining, not to mention the long-awaited physical release of Mercy House. Some of these stories are absolutely fantastic and deserve a wider audience, especially one such as Zero Lives Remaining.

This book is as much nostalgia as it is straight mayhem. A survival horror novella set in a haunted arcade with strong B-movie vibes, Zero Lives Remaining is fast-aced and gruesome. While the blood and gore is present, the book also has a glimpse of heart with someone trying to help but ultimately going too far. Even with the short length, there was something special about this story. It’s a ghost story with a 1980s slasher vibe which is all nostalgia.

The neon-soaked setting of the arcade is one that most of us 1980s kids can vividly remember. The easy-going days of tossing a few quarters in the machine and playing until you were out of money and even at that moment you waited until those around you were out of cash before heading home on your bike. The simple days. Cesare takes these fun childhood memories and slashes the hell out of them with brutal kills and haunted nightmares.

The opening chapter with Robby making a pizza was so relatable, that is until he gets sucked into the pizza oven and ultimately becomes a ghost that haunts the arcade. But it’s really all the characters that you can either relate to, know someone who could relate to them, or have been have seen similar situations play out. Again, that is until people start dying and the place becomes mayhem.

While Clown in a Cornfield continues to top the list of Adam Cesare books, Zero Lives Remaining is a testament to Cesare’s knack for crafting terrifying tales out of nostalgia. Filled with video game references and gruesome kills, Zero Lives Remaining will make you think twice when putting more quarters in the machine.

The new edition of Zero Lives Remaining hits bookstores everywhere on September 1, 2026 from Union Square & Co. The audiobook, narrated by Chelsea Rebecca, is available via Libro.fm!
