Prequels tend to get me worried about the ability to live up to the original story or pack the same punch (no not just the Star Wars prequels). That was not the case with this action-packed and explosive first issue of Tyler Rake: An Extraction Story by writer Ande Parks and artist Ronan Cliquet.
Mercenary in hiding, Tyler Rake, thought he was starting over. But his story, is just beginning…
Working as a bouncer in one of Sao Paolo’s most popular nightclubs, Tyler’s world is about to be upended when a tussle with a connected drug dealer goes horribly wrong forcing him to take on a job he never wanted in order to stay hidden.
Even as a comic fan, I’ll be honest when saying that I stumbled upon Extraction first as a feature film without knowledge of the Ciudad source material. Which is a sad thing to say, but the truth. However, the benefit of knowing there is a comic to read the movie was based on is always fun as you get the chance to grab the comic and dive in. Now, the chance to get even more to the story makes for an outstanding experience.
The premiere issue of Tyler Rake: An Extraction Story takes us back to prior to the main story with Rake working at a popular Sao Paolo nightclub before having his life turned upside down forcing him to take an unwanted job with eventually leads us to the story we all know. Parks revives the feeling of an Extraction story while also telling a fresh tale and giving us more about the universe we have come to love.
Filled with thrilling action from the start, Tyler Rake: An Extraction Story lays the foundation not only for the Ignition Press series, but the overall franchise. While we get introduced to Tyler Rake for the first time, technically, we also get the feeling of a Ciudad or Extraction story from the outset. This likely due to Parks being in the drivers seat and navigating the early days of Rake.
While Parks story sets the overall tale in motion, it’s the artwork by Cliquet that sets the tone. Phenomenal illustrations bursting with action that nearly jump from each panel and page. You get the vibe of a cinematic action film within the pages of a single-issue comic, making it an easy transition for those jumping from screen to page. You can almost feel each punch and explosion.
Tyler Rake: An Extraction Story is Ande Parks at their best and elevated even more by the explosive artwork by Ronan Cliquet. An Extraction comic for those longtime fans of the storyline or those looking to dive in for the first time. What an excellent addition to the Ignition Press lineup where this comic feels at home.
Tyler Rake: An Extraction Story #1 hits local comic shops on April 1, 2026 from Ignition Press. Also be on the lookout for the brand new trade edition of Extraction coming April 14.
