Satanic Panic #1

Writer: Matt Miner
Artist: Clayton McCormack
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios

A sleepy 1980s town is stalked by a masked slasher at the height of the Satanic Panic, where every heavy metal record, Dungeons & Dragons campaign and teenage outsider is treated as evidence of devil worship. As fear spreads and bodies pile up, three local misfits become the prime suspects in a series of gruesome murders. Join D&D geeks and Ozzy enthusiasts Naz, Sal, and Terry as they race to clear their names, survive an increasingly blood-soaked town and unmask the real killer before paranoia claims more innocent lives. From Ringo Award and GLAAD Media Award-winning writer Matt Miner (Poser, Young Men in Love, Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins) and artist Clayton McCormack (Batman: White Knight Presents – Generation Joker) comes a brutal new horror series that blends slasher terror and the paranoia of the Satanic Panic into one unforgettable nightmare.

As a child of the 1980s I was a generation separated from the height of Satanic Panic, being only 4 years old when life moved into the 1990s, but I don’t live under a rock and know it was a weird time to be alive. What this comic, with the iconic name, does is give you a bit of insight to the crazy time, while also giving us the slasher goodness that we could hope for.

Yes, Satanic Panic is filled with the gruesome horror we showed up for, but also shows the horrific things those who are deemed to be considered outsiders went through during these times in places such as this. Let’s be honest, kids still have to deal with this shit in present day as well. Not just the bullying for playing Dungeons & Dragons, but the homophobia and racism that runs ramped through small towns.

These kids are just wanting to have a bit of fun, smoke a bit a grass, listen to heavy metal, and play D&D with their friends, but all hell breaks loose – with them being the victims – and they become the target just for being a bit different. The group of teens become an easy target when your small town police is filled with homophobic and racist police. But there is something more sinister in this town and it goes beyond the closed-minded leaders.

Satanic Panic has the brutal horror moments, but also the more conversational intimate moments that spread the unease and dread. The suspense is lingering and the mystery is at an all-time high as the first issue comes to a close. It’s a dark and moody, slasher-y first issue that has me eagerly awaiting more.

The artwork is edgy, dark and gritty adding to this horror vibe. McCormack’s lines have a tension to them that just deepens the horrors that light within. Oliver Mertz adds colors that are also dark and ominous, rounding out the visuals.

Writer Matt Miner and artist Clayton McCormack craft a meaningful, yet terrifying comic that will frighten you on many levels. There is definitely something here with this first issue.

The post Satanic Panic #1: The Town May Be Scarier Than the Slasher appeared first on Capes and Tights.

Offended by his lump of coal, he vows to make it his life’s mission to haunt Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick. As the situation escalates, Sam and Twitch stumble upon a series of grim discoveries, but it is ultimately SPAWN who must confront this relentless tormentor and restore peace to the holiday season.

There is something that works so perfectly when horror crosses paths with the holiday season. The juxtaposition of holiday cheer and terrifying horror that make me feel the warmth of the season. Things are supposed to be jolly during Christmas, but when a horror story is placed squarely in this merry season it screams even louder.

Killian and Sanders could’ve crafted a story based in the Spawn Universe that was just Santa, Christmas, and the season of giving with Spawn as the forefront character and I would’ve still be in line on new comic day to grab the book. But what the creative team does with I Saw Santa is so much more. The use of Sam and Twitch to investigate a horrible murder on Christmas Eve to kick things off made so much more sense, both fitting the mold of a Spawn story but also making it accessible to those unfamiliar with the universe.

Spawn is approaching issue 380 with 400 on the horizon, not to mention the many off-shoot series in recent years, so I can be daunting to want to dive into a mini series such as I Saw Santa, knowing it was based in the Spawn Universe. However, Killian and Sanders deliver a tale that grazes the lore of Spawn without making the reader feel lost. This allows us to enjoy this horrifying story without the burden of catching up on 34 years of Spawn comics.

This is a Santa Claus story, one that is unique and fresh, but it is also a gruesome and visceral horror story. Something we don’t see often, but works so well together. While this tale could’ve been placed in its own universe outside of Spawn, the slight connective tissue made it so much more special. The appearance of a few familiar faces and storylines, again…that don’t distract from the accessibility of the story, gave the tale a bit more depth for those who know. Sam and Twitch are fantastic characters and using them to place the story where it is made me smile when opening the very first page.

Nachlik illustrates a story that feels like Spawn, but also brings this dark holiday vibe to it as well. The artist doesn’t shy away from the gruesome and grotesque, making I Saw Santa not for the faint of heart. I do appreciate the moments of verbalizing a particular death without the imagery to go along with it, when you get to that point you’ll understand. The brutality is meaningful and not just for the shock factor, which made the story that much more of an enjoyable reading experience than just disturbing factor. Colors by Dan Kemp are dark and moody which lends itself to both the Spawn Universe and the horrors within.

I Saw Santa is a brutal and terrifyingly fresh Christmas story that is the perfect blend of holidays and horror. Writers Chris Killian & Andrew Sanders and artist Thomas Nachlik deliver an incredibly accessible tale in the Spawn Universe where Santa is pushed to his limits and blood is shed. While I was expecting a solid comic as a this series fits square in the horror genre , but also as a huge fan of Brisson’s storytelling. However, Hammer Head was not at all what I expected at its core, in such a glorious way. This debut issue is a slasher horror, but one that had a twist I did not see coming, one that takes the plot to an entire new level. One that makes me eager to continue this series.

A lot takes place over the pages of the first issue, but ultimately not a lot takes place at the same time. The debut issue does, however, lay a wonderful foundation on the hard life lived by our protagonist ever since her bad night a number years ago. The only survivor of the infamous Hammer Head. Brisson sets up the feel of what seems to be a balls-to-the-wall horror story that will hit harder and harder as we move along.

The character development is strong, even only over the first issue. I already care for Jules and her survival. Not much is known about our antagonist, but you can easily feel there is an intricate backstory that may or may not be explained in the future. However, it feels like the mystery makes their character all the more frightening and terrifying. Beyond Hammer Head, there is definitely something sinister going on behind the scenes that is not revealed, but damn does something feel off.

Couceiro’s art style blends perfectly with this style of story. A slasher horror vibe with gritty and gruesome artwork that immerses you into this fear-filled tale. The dark and brooding colors by Dee Cunniffe work well with Damian’s lines adding to the over experience. This creative team seems to vibe in ways that make this story feel complete.

Hammer Head is one of those comics that I knew would be worth reading, but surprised the hell out of me in such a fantastic way. Writer Ed Brisson and illustrator Damian Couceiro craft a gloriously twisted must-read horror that delivers all the bloody fun of a classic slasher while carving out something uniquely its own.

The petrifying partnership tears into comic shops late 2027 with the fan-favorite The Purge. Eisner Award-winning writer Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns, TMNT: Shredder) and acclaimed artist Juan José Ryp (Wolverine: Blood Hunt, Ghost Rider: Vengeance Forever) brings the dystopian and compelling premise – a world in which any and all crime, especially murder, is legal one night a year – to the pages of the comics with a gripping new chapter that features all the action, tension, and emotion that fans crave from the thrilling franchise. Following The Purge will be more unforgettable hits from Blumhouse making their comic book debuts with all-new stories, including M3GAN and New York Times best-selling writer Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash, The Revival) taking a stab at Happy Death Day.

A darkly comedic slasher with a sci-fi twist, Happy Death Day made an undeniable impact on pop culture with its mystery about a murder victim being forced to relive the day of their death over and over again to discover the shocking truth and unmask their killer.

Packed with chills and twisted humor with rich themes, the beloved sci-fi horror M3GAN is the saga of an advanced A.I. doll which takes its good-intentioned programming to extreme and bloody measures. Additional details about these titles and more from the acclaimed Blumhouse library of fear will be revealed at a later date.

“Quality storytelling experiences are always our top priority at IDW, so partnering with Blumhouse to expand our horror imprint was truly a no-brainer decision,” said Davidi Jonas, IDW CEO. “Working with Blumhouse to continue exploring the compelling potential of their modern classics within the pages of the comics is a tremendous honor and the creative conversations have been exciting. I can’t wait for fans to feast their eyes on these stories.”

Just like buying tickets before going to the movie theater to guarantee a good seat, fans should contact a comic shop near them to pre-order The Purge to make sure they don’t miss out on getting their copies.

The crossover no one saw coming is here! When a teenage John Connor enrolls at Riverdale High, Archie and the gang soon find themselves in the crosshairs of a Terminator!

Like most of the Archie crossover events, they don’t always make perfect sense on the surface, but once you dive into the first issue, the creative team seems to know exactly how to handle said story. While Terminator going to battle with Archie might not make any sense whatsoever at first glance, the debut issue is honestly one of the least jarring of recent Riverdale crossovers. I full expect things to go utterly crazy in future issues, the first issue laid the foundation and introduced Archie and friends to Max, aka John Conners, setting up the story in a way that made sense in the end.

Some of the other crazy crossovers have felt a little odd, but Archie vs. Terminator had the vibe of an Archie comic with Terminator characters dropped into the story. We have our familiar faces in Riverdale and the antics, comedy, and high school life we’ve come to expect, but there is a new kid at school and he may not be exactly who he says he is. In typical Riverdale fashion, invite the new kid to a party and make sure he feels at home, but again something is just not right. Things are not that crazy for most of this debut, but ratchets up to 11 by the time we hit the end.

The blending of two iconic franchises like this, in this way, makes for stories that will scratch the itch of both Archie and Terminator fans. Seeing our favorite Riverdale High Schoolers interact with the rough and tumble characters such as John Connors lends itself to the thought that truly anything can happen and just about anyone can appear in Riverdale. Setting a Terminator story in this iconic town just gives the action-packed story a familiar backdrop that no one was asking for, but never knew we needed.

Going hand-in-hand with the overall vibe of an Archie story, Butler’s artwork just adds to this overall feeling. The line work, colors and appearance of most of the story makes you feel right at home in Riverdale and an Archie story, but with glimpses of Terminator makes you know something is different here. Rooting the style in Riverdale made for the story to feel all that more special, but also feels right at home at the same time.

Archie vs. Terminator is another Riverdale crossover that no one was asking for, but now that it’s here, can’t live without. Writer Rory McConville and artist Steven Butler have crafted a truly unique and exciting story that blends action-packed characters from Terminator and our fun-loving teens from Riverdale into an amazing crossover that makes no sense, but somehow does at the same time.

Archie vs. Terminator #1 hits local comic shops on October 14, 2026 from Dynamite Entertainment.
