The Boogyman tells the story of Elliott, who witnesses the murder of his parents and gets plunged into the terrifying universe of the Boogymen. The series presents a unique take on classic horror stories by creating a universe where the monsters, rather than hiding in the shadows, live in an imaginary world with each other’s rules and codes. The story is gripping and will keep you on the edge of your seat, as you follow Elliott’s journey of self-discovery through this dangerous world of Boogymen.

What sets The Boogyman apart from other horror comics is the perfect balance of blood and gore without overdoing it. The artwork by Djet is breathtaking and is a perfect match for Silvia’s writing. The illustrations have distinct characteristics with details down to the smallest features of each character, making it easier to recognize which boogymen are who, and helping readers to relate to them.

Besides the artwork, The Boogyman is a non-stop adventure full of action, thrill, and excitement.

The Boogyman is an adventurous take on the concept of boogymen, and it’s perfect for fans of the horror genre. The storylines have both compelling and commendable characters to enjoy. The illustrations are amazing, and the writing is precise and rich in detail. The Boogyman is an example of an impressive horror comic that does not disappoint.

The collected edition, collecting all six issues of the series, drops at local comic shops on September 6, 2023 from Ablaze Publishing.

In addition to the big two of Marvel and DC, there are hundreds more comic book publishers printing comics these days. However, a few stand above the rest.

We took the time to look at books from 2022 and which publisher was putting out the best lineup of comics. Here is our five favorite with an honorable mention.

Honorable Mention: Ablaze

The mantra of Ablaze Publishing is quality first, with the goals of giving creators a platform, bringing new voices into the conversation, serving as diverse an audience as possible and bringing some of the best content from all corners of the globe to readers.

Ablaze came to the party towards the latter half of 2022 with The Boogyman and Traveling To Mars, two titles worth mentioning. However, there are a few more publishers with a bigger impact on us this year.

Look for the continuation of The Boogyman and Traveling To Mars in 2023 and be sure to be on the lookout for Children of the Black Sun #1 coming in January.

We should also mentioned Mad Cave Studios, Vault Comics and AWA Studios made some outstanding comics in 2022 as well.

The post 5 Favorite Comic Book Publishers of 2022 appeared first on Capes and Tights.

Children of the Black Sun #1 is brought to you by writer Dario Sicchio (Black Rock, Sole Nero) and artist Letizia Cadonici (House Of Slaughter).

Over the years, a black sun has risen twice. A dark dawn whose rays have done terrible things to people’s minds, driving them to all sorts of horror. Twelve years have passed since the last time and the world still fears the return of that inexplicable phenomenon. But fear is not the only legacy of those terrible days. All the women who got pregnant under the influence of the black sun have given birth to babies with some… peculiarities. White hair, ashy skin, abnormal proportions, and eyes as red as fire: the Children of the Black Sun.

Brightvale is a small town like many others. Here the Children of the Black Sun are treated with contempt, especially in the days leading up to the anniversary of the two disasters. The hatred of their fellow villagers, terrified of a possible return of that horror, will push these kids to unite and embark on a hallucinatory journey to discover themselves and their true nature. But is the black sun about to return?

With an enticing cover, Children of the Black Sun #1 was a draw from the start. Add into the mix Cadonici’s artwork and a great story from Sicchio the series was set to be a hit. Now, while Candonici’s illustrations are not at the top of my artist list, they are great for what they are and fit perfectly within this horror series.

The opening few pages is shown to us as they were illustrated by a kid and is a perfect way to explain the history of the Black Sun. This style of course changes as the comic continues, but the story being told from a child’s perspective in school is a great way to kick off the book.

Pacing and story progress well and gives you enough to want to see what happens next. Overall, a good book and a great addition to an already stellar Ablaze roster of books.

Children of the Black Sun #1 hits local comic shops on January 4, 2023 with issue two coming February 1. Be sure to let your LCS know you are interested to get the book ordered!

From two-time Eisner and Harvey Award nominee Mark Russell and hot new talent Roberto Meli comes a compelling new sci-fi series. Traveling To Mars #1 hits shelves at your local comic book shops on Wednesday, November 9.

Traveling to Mars tells the story of former pet store manager Roy Livingston, the first human to ever set foot on Mars. Roy was chosen for this unlikely mission for one simple reason: he is terminally ill and therefore has no expectation of returning. Roy is joined on his mission to Mars by Leopold and Albert, two Mars rovers equipped with artificial intelligence, who look upon the dying pet store manager as a sort of god. Against the backdrop of not only his waning days but those of human civilization as well, Roy has ample time to think about where things went wrong for both of them and what it means to be a dying god.

A riveting story of planetary exploration and of finding meaning in your final days.

Amazingly told via a mixture of narrative journaling and speech bubbles, Traveling To Mars has you pondering the questions in the mind of Roy Livingston as your own. Would I leave Earth to become the first person to land on Mars, knowing I couldn’t return which shouldn’t matter if I was terminal anyway?

Russell allows me to car deeply about what is going on in Roy’s life and his mission. However, not all can be good and they creative team allows for more to be answered in future issues of this new Ablaze series.

Meli’s artwork lends itself perfectly to Russell’s writing and gives you great details when needed. Colors by Chiara Di Francia mesh smoothly with Meli’s lines to bring you into the world of the comic book. Lettering by Mattia Gentli is outstanding with a great separation between what is narrated by Livingston and what is being spoken by characters in the book.

Books based around a space race or intergalactic travel have always been at the top of my wishlist and the creative team nailed this one. Thoughtful, meaningful, caring story with space travel with inventible twists and turns coming in future issues.

Pickup the first issue of Traveling To Mars #1 Wednesday, November 9 and be sure to remember to grab the follow up issue on December 7.

The post Traveling To Mars #1 Is Dying To Make History In Astonishing Debut appeared first on Capes and Tights.

Written by Mathieu Salvia with art by Djet, The Boogyman #1 hit local comic book shops on Wednesday, September 7 from ABLAZE Publishing.

Monsters don’t only exist in children’s minds…

Passionate about reading, Elliott has always had a preference for the stories of boogeymen, those monstrous creatures which, at night, hide in the shadows or under the bed to frighten little children. He can’t imagine how much they will change his life… Witnessing the bloody murder of his parents, he will discover that, in reality, boogeymen do indeed exist, and very precise codes govern their existence. When one of the most powerful boogeymen, “Father-Death,” decides to protect him, Elliott finds himself plunged into a terrible conflict at the heart of a universe as terrifying as it is fascinating. On a dark, stormy night, Elliott’s destiny will be fulfilled…

The Boogyman‘s first issue has amazing art and a great base for a story that is both unique and intriguing. A war between factions of boogymen that sees Elliott in the crosshairs, but has unlikely help. Pacing, and story are well thought out. Giving you the ability to get some answers in the first issue without too much and allowing you to get excited for the following issues.

Djet does an amazing job creating angles like a film or television show and giving you a glimpse on how small Elliott is compared to the monsters now well involved in his life.

Taking the chance on this book was well worth it, as I normally don’t tend to purchase comics from ABLAZE. Nothing against the publisher, just not many comics that have caught my eye. The Boogyman #1 caught my eye and the pairing of Salvia and Djet couldn’t have been better.

The Boogyman #2 hits your LCS on October 26, 2022.
