The newest comic series, Void Rivals, from The Walking Dead and Invincible creator has dropped and with it came a huge introduction of the Energon Universe shared between the Transformers and G.I. Joe. The blockbuster Oblivion Song team of Robert Kirkman & Lorenzo De Felici are back at it again with this new series.
The story takes place around the Sacred Ring, where the last remnants of two worlds are locked in a never-ending battle around a black hole. However, the story takes a turn when two rivals, Darak and Solila, crash-land on a desolate planet. Now, these enemies must learn to work together if they hope to survive and uncover the dark forces that threaten the entire universe.
Kirkman and De Felici’s excellent world-building foundation makes Void Rivals #1 stand out. The comic immerses readers in a universe that is both rich in detail and full of potential for future stories. The world-building isn’t limited to Void Rivals but also includes the Transformers, and in the future G.I. Joe. The possibilities for adventure are endless.
De Felici’s artwork is another major highlight of Void Rivals. He does a fantastic job of bringing Kirkman’s world to life with visually stunning and dynamic panels. His character designs are unique and add a sense of personality to the comic. The backgrounds are intricate and detailed, making each page a delight to explore. This is all something we remember and like from Oblivion Song.
The pacing is well thought out, making it perfect for both new and old fans of sci-fi comics. It balances exposition, action, and character development, creating a well-rounded experience. The dialogue is natural, and the character’s personalities shine through, making you truly invested in their journey.
The unlikely alliance between Darak and Solila is a nice touch. Although they are bitter rivals, they must learn to work together if they want to survive on the desolate planet they’ve found themselves on. The tension between the two characters is palpable, and you’re never quite sure if they’ll be able to overcome their differences.
Void Rivals #1 hit local comic shops on June 14 with the world a buzz. Over the 8-12 months Skybound will drop Transformers #1, Duke #1, Cobra Commander #1 and more in the Energon Universe.
