Writer Jordan Clark and artist Atagun Ilhan have delivered something truly special with Ancestral Recall. A bold, imaginative story built on a powerful idea that really strikes a cord. The premiere issue sets the tone for what should be a fantastic new series.
Black History: For painter Melvin Waring, it’s an actual super power! When Melvin’s wife mysteriously disappears, he must call on the most important Black figures of all time to help him in his search.
Jordan Clark opens with the familiar, then flips the script, launching us into a magical journey through Black History in something that feels both grounded and otherworldly. A thought-provoking comic that is not only based around Black history, but celebrates it with every fiber of its being. This tale gives me the feeling that it comes from someplace deep, telling a personal story with a supernatural twist.
The artwork from Atagun Ilhan adds a ton to the story with outstanding illustrations that feel so perfect for the story at hand. Add in Pippa Bowland‘s color palette and each and every panel comes to life with what seems like stunning ease. Artwork that lends itself to the grounded story as well as the magic supernatural side of things.
Ancestral Recall #1 isn’t just a comic featuring Black History, but one that honors the history. The premiere issue is a rare blend of mystical adventure and cultural tribute that feels poignant, original, and absolutely worth your time. Ancestral Recall is must-read comic.
Ancestral Recall #1 hits local comic shops on August 6, 2025 from Ahoy Comics.
