In this premiere issue, Scott revisits Anakin Skywalker as a reckless immature Padawan, someone who is quick to act, slow to think, and is sure he knows best. As usual, Obi-Wan Kenobi is left to attempt to clean up the chaos left in his wake. Scott blends classic Jedi action adventure with a ghost story twist to create something different in the Star Wars universe and nails it.
Tales from the Nightlands wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable if not for Soo Lee’s incredible artwork. Lee’s illustrations are take Scott story and visualizes in with haunting and creepy vibes. The ghostly spirits are eerie and intense, yet they still feel right at home in the Star Wars universe. While Lee’s illustrations fit this tell extremely well, it’s the cover by legendary artist Francesco Francavilla that draws you in the first place.
Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands is a ton fun, a home run from Cavan Scott and Soo Lee. The eerie blend of Star Wars sci-fi and ghost story horror is unique and truly broadens the scope of the Star Wars Universe. A strong start to the miniseries, making it hard to wait for what these two creators due with the rest of the run.
