The perfect matchup of characters like Donald Duck as Wolverine and Goofy as Hulk sets the tone for a wonderful story by Luca Barbieri. The creative choice to blend these classic Disney characters, headlined by Donald Duck for his 90th anniversary, with iconic Marvel superheroes adds a unique twist to the world of comics. It’s refreshing to see familiar faces new roles, bringing a sense of nostalgia while introducing something fresh and exciting. This unique take on a classic characters is truly out there, but was worth the journey.
In addition to the wonderful story, the artwork is paired extremely well. Giada Perissinotto captures the essence of both the Disney and Marvel universes with the amazing cartoon flair. Perissinotto brings to life a new rendition of classic characters in a mashup that is jarring, but fun. The attention to detail in each panel to blend these universes is masterfully done.
While the What if Donald Duck Became Wolverine is not groundbreaking or overly complex, it doesn’t need to be, it lies perfectly in the middle grade readers wheelhouse. I just appreciated the fun and adventurous spirit of Donald Duck as Wolverine, along with the other character mashups. The feel was lighthearted and playful to make an enjoyable read that is different than most on the market right now. The book doesn’t take itself too seriously.
