Review Overview

Quicksand is a comic book miniseries from Scout Comics that takes readers on an exhilarating journey through a world that lies beneath us. The series was written by Jonathan Hedrick (The Recount) and features artwork by the talented Debora Lancianese. The five-issue series follows the story of teams of elite specialists attempting to explore the unknown.

The first issue of the Quicksand series begins with a mysterious hole opening up in the Egyptian desert. From there, horrific creatures begin to climb out and wreak havoc on a nearby city. The planet is shocked by the unfathomable event, and the world sends in a team of elite specialists called “Canary One” to investigate the monsters.

Throughout the series, we get to see the team members’ growth and development, including their friendships and conflicts. The richness of character development within the characters’ diverse backgrounds lends depth to the plot, giving readers a reason to care about what happens. As we delve deeper into the series, it becomes clear that the monsters are only the tip of the iceberg, and there’s a lot more at stake beneath the surface.

The series features some truly thrilling monster deaths, with the perfect amount of gore to keep the story thrilling without crossing over into gratuitous. The art by Debora Lancianese is stunning, and Hedrick’s writing is top-notch, leading to a seamless blend of story and visuals. From the stunning action scenes to the quieter moments between characters, Lancianese’s art elevates the story and makes it an immersive read.

The only downside to Quicksand is that it’s too short. Five issues is not enough to fully explore the world Hedrick and Lancianese have created. While the story is wrapped up in a satisfying manner, it leaves you wanting more. You’ll find yourself wishing for additional issues so you can see what happens next to the characters you’ve come to care about.

The Quicksand miniseries is an excellent read that will take you on an unforgettable journey. The story is well-written, and the art fits perfectly, making it a worthwhile read. The character development is compelling, and the monsters add just the right amount of danger and excitement to the story.

Quicksand truly is The Thing meets Starship Troopers!

The debut issue dropped on May 10, 2023 and recently release the second issue on August 23. Quicksand #3 hits local comic shops on September 27 with issues four and five coming October 18 and November 29 respectively. If you are interested in the first few issues ask you LCS or hit scoutcomics.com!
