Sometimes comics are just that, comics to read, others are perfectly made to be optioned and adapted for tv or feature film.

We put together a list of ten comics yet-to-be optioned, or at least publicly announced, that you should read.

The Fall

The Fall Optioned

Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Jared Muralt
Artist: Jared Muralt

After just losing his wife, one father will have to face a world in freefall; shaken to its core by an economic, social, political and health crisis without precedent. Facing seemingly unreal and very unexpected dangers, he will do whatever it takes to protect his loved ones in a country on the brink of collapse. In this internationally acclaimed series, Jared Muralt not only tells the story of one family struggling to survive, but also questions the very reasons that brought mankind to this apocalypse.

The Fall was originally published as “La Chute” in French, but was released in English by Image Comics in 2021. Muralt is responsible for both writing and art.

Grim

Grim Optioned

Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Flaviano

Jessica Harrow is dead. But her journey has only just begun!

Discover the world of the afterlife, where Jessica has been recruited as a Reaper, tasked with ferrying countless souls to their final destination.

But unlike the rest of the Reapers, she has no memory of what killed her and put her into this predicament.

In order to unravel the mystery of her own demise, she’ll have to solve an even bigger one – where is the actual GRIM REAPER?

Written by Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn) with art by Flaviano (New Mutants) this series is two issues into the series with issue three arriving in July.

Crossover

Crossover Optioned

Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Donny Cates
Artist: Geoff Shaw

In 2017, fictional characters from comic books and other media come to life in the real world, and their actions cause a lot of unintentional destruction and death around the city of Denver, Colorado.

Five years later (2022), several humans and characters join forces and embark on a quest to return to Denver and find out the cause behind “The Event”.

Crossover is written by Donny Cates (Venom, God Country) with art by Geoff Shaw (Guardians of the Galaxy, God Country). This on-going series is currently at issue thirteen.

The Electric Black

The Electric Black

Publisher: Black Caravan
Writer: Joseph Schmalke, Rich Woodall
Artist: Joseph Schmalke, Rich Woodall

The Electric Black is a cursed antique shop, appearing in any time or space, soliciting customers it hungers to corrupt or devour. The mysterious Julius Black is the store’s demonic proprietor and narrator. He, along with his psychopathic employees, regularly manipulates patrons for their own devious purposes. Inside the eerie emporium, all of the forbidden objects have secrets to unlock. The poor souls that enter never leave without something. Its dark light will shine on macabre mysteries, grisly murders, and other frightful occurrences. Dare you step within its sinister halls?

This comic comes from the mind of Joseph Schmalke (Seven Years In Darkness, We Don’t Kill Spiders) and Rich Woodall (Gods of Brutality). Both Schmalke and Woodall are responsible for art and writing in this four-issue series.

We Don’t Kill Spiders

We Don't Kill Spiders

Publisher: Black Caravan
Writer: Joseph Schmalke
Artist: Joseph Schmalke

In the early Viking Age, a faithless Norseman detective is summoned to a Scandinavian hamlet where a series of murders have occurred. Discovering the dark and bloody history of the village he investigates the local outcast, a necromantic witch who brings his atheistic values into question. Determined to prevent further homicides the two band together to discover the identity of a serial killer.

Another book from Joseph Schmalke (The Electric Black, Seven Years in Darkness), only this time it’s only Schmalke. This three-issue mini series comes from Joe’s co-published Black Caravan imprint.

What’s The Furthest Place From Here

What's The Furthest Place From Here

Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Matthew Rosenberg
Artist: Tyler Boss

The world has ended. All that remains are gangs of children living among the ruins. But Sid believes there must be something more out there. When she disappears into the wastelands, her gang will risk everything to bring her home. A story about the things that matter most-your survival, your loved ones, and your record collection.

Written by Matthew Rosenberg (4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, Edge of Venomverse) with art by Tyler Boss (4 Kids Walk into a Bank, Dead Dog’s Bite). What’s The Furthest Place From Here just released issue seven in June with issues eight and nine due out in August and September respectively.

The Me You Love In The Dark

The Me You Love In The Dark

Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Skottie Young
Artist: Jorge Corona

An artist named Ro retreats from the grind of the city to an old house in a small town to find solace and inspiration without realizing the muse within is not what she expected. Fans of Stephen King and Neil Gaiman will enjoy this beautiful, dark, and disturbing story of discovery, love, and terror.

Writer Skottie Young (I Hate Fairyland, Twig) and artist Jorge Corona (We Are Robin, Feathers) join forces once again after their successful book Middlewest. The Me You Love In The Dark is a five-issue mini-series.

The Nice House on the Lake

Nice House On The Lake

Publisher: DC Black Label
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Álvaro Martínez Bueno

Everyone who was invited to the house knows Walter—well, they know him a little, anyway. Some met him in childhood; some met him months ago. And Walter’s always been a little…off. But after the hardest year of their lives, nobody was going to turn down Walter’s invitation to an astonishingly beautiful house in the woods, overlooking an enormous sylvan lake. It’s beautiful, it’s opulent, it’s private—so a week of putting up with Walter’s weird little schemes and nicknames in exchange for the vacation of a lifetime? Why not? All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn’t a chance to reconnect be…nice?

James Tynion IV (Something Is Killing The Children, Batman) is at it once again with a great horror book with art by Álvaro Martínez Bueno (Ultimate Comics X-Men, Justice League Dark). This DC Black Label book is a twelve-issue series currently on issue nine.

The Nice House on the Lake would be just another in the long list of comics to be optioned by Hollywood to have been written by Tynion.

Last Flight Out

Publisher: Dark Horse
Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Eduardo Ferigato

With Earth rendered uninhabitable, humanity has chosen to evacuate to the stars. But with just twenty-four hours left until the last ark, designed to evacuate Earth’s residents, leaves forever, its designer’s estranged daughter goes missing. This series tells the story of an absentee father trying to make amends with his daughter during the end of the world.

Writer Marc Guggenheim (X-Men: Gold, Blade) and artist Eduardo Ferigato (Quad, The Last Phantom) team up for this six-issue series at Dark Horse. Last Flight would be perfect to be optioned.

I Hate Fairyland

Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Skottie Young
Artist: Skottie Young

The Adventure Time/Alice in Wonderland-style epic that smashes its cute little face against Tank Girl/Deadpool-esque violent madness has arrived. In an adventure that ain’t for the little kiddies, (unless you have super cool parents, then whatever), you’ll meet Gert—a six year old girl who has been stuck in the magical world of Fairyland for thirty years and will hack and slash her way through anything to find her way back home. Join Gert and her giant battle-axe on a delightfully blood soaked journey to see who will survive the girl who hates fairyland.

Skottie Young (Strange Academy, The Me You Love In The Dark) at his best. Young is responsible for the art and writing in this twenty-issue series. Gert will return to comics in a continuation of I Hate Fairyland in the near future.
