TMNT: Mutant Mayhem hit theaters on August 2, 2023 from Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Pictures and it was a perfect addition the the world of the Turtles.
When it comes to cultural icons, few things can compare to the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They’ve been a household name for decades, finding their way into comic books, television shows, video games, and feature films. Their latest offering, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, is a reimagining of the classic characters and their story.
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, we see the four Turtle brothers – Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello – interacting with the human world. Their new friend, April O’Neil, helps them navigate the world, but they soon find themselves caught up in a dangerous situation involving a mysterious crime syndicate. The action-packed plot is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, and the turtles’ smart-ass banter makes for plenty of laughs.
One of the standout features of the movie is its unique visual style. The animation style draws similar comparison to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but with more of a rough feel that sets itself apart. The nostalgic 80s and 90s hip-hop soundtrack is the perfect complement to the film’s upbeat tone.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a fantastic reimagining of the classic characters. The filmmakers manage to balance contemporary writing and innovative visual style with nostalgic childhood cultural touchstones that will appeal to both new and longtime fans of the franchise. The filmmakers did an excellent job of creating a film that can appeal to all age groups while staying true to the beloved characters.
Mutant Mayhem was directed by Jeff Rowe, co-directed by Kyler Spears, and written by Rowe, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit based on characters co-created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
The film stars Micah Abbey as Donatello, Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo, Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, and Brady Noon as Raphael. Also starring is Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Rogen as Bebop, John Cena as Rocksteady, Jackie Chan as Splinter, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is currently in theaters around the globe after opening to the tune of $51.5 million on opening weekend. With a budget of $70 million it seems the film is not only going to be well received by critics, but also a financial success.
