Review Overview

Writer James Tynion IV (Something is Killing the Children) and illustrator Joshua Hixson (The Plot) team-up to bring us The Deviant #1, a horror and holiday-themed comic book that is sure to become a classic. This double-sized debut issue is an exceptionally well-written and illustrated comic that draws readers in from the first panel to the last.

The story takes place in Milwaukee in 1972, where a Santa Claus, soaked in blood, commits unspeakable atrocities against young men. Fifty years later, a writer interviews the killer, known only as The Deviant Killer, who is still in prison professing his innocence. As Christmas approaches, the past returns with a sharpened ax, and the writer finds himself drawn into a world of horror and suspense.

The Deviant is a perfect blend of horror and holidays. The creators have successfully managed to weave together the two genres to create a unique story that is both terrifying and heartwarming. The holiday theme is not overused; instead, it is used to accentuate the horror and suspense, making it more effective.

While The Deviant is gory or violent it is not overdone. It strikes the perfect balance between storytelling and visual display, making it easy to delve into the story and become emotionally invested in the characters.

The writing in The Deviant is excellent. James Tynion IV has captured the voices of the characters perfectly, making them feel real and relatable. The narration and descriptions are vivid and effective, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the story. The dialogue is sharp and witty, adding depth and humor to the characters and the plot.

Joshua Hixson’s artwork is stunning. The illustrations are detailed and evocative, conveying both the horror and the joy of the holiday season. Every panel is a work of art, and the use of color is particularly effective. The artwork complements the writing perfectly, enhancing the narrative and making it more impactful. Additionally, the excellent lettering form Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou just adds to the story.

The Deviant is an outstanding comic that is sure to become a classic. It’s the perfect blend of horror and holidays, brilliantly written and illustrated. The characters are relatable, the dialogue is sharp and witty, and the artwork is stunning. The Deviant is just what we needed in the wide world of comics.

The Deviant #1 hit local comic shops on November 15, 2023 from Image Comics.
