There has been a few stories over the years taking well-known characters and placing them far off in the future, but this concept really captured the attention of comic readers with TMNT: The Last Ronin. Now, in Power Rangers: Green, Paul Allor and artist Gustaffo Vargas take us many years into the future with the last Power Ranger, Tommy Oliver.

The world we know is long gone. Tommy Oliver has put away his morpher and settled into a quiet life with his strange little family. But one day, an unexpected visitor from his past arrives on his doorstep and challenges him to take up the hero’s mantle once more.
Can he relive the past with this unexpected ally? Will the Green Power Ranger finally return?
Seeing what the world and characters are like far off into the future, past what we would all expect a story to be centered, is always a fun concept. When done right. Allor crafts a story in Power Rangers: Green that sees Tommy Oliver partner up with an unlikely companion to help save the world. So, not only do we get the future with one remaining Power Ranger, but a team-up of two characters you’d never expect to be working together.
In this premiere issue, Allor sets up a future where we have to ask the question, does Tommy Oliver still have what it takes to take up the mantel of Green Ranger? With this first issue you can see that Oliver is still reeling from the events that lead up to him as the sole Ranger. He is also trying to protect those around him and live his life the best he can. But when something threatens, not only his wellbeing and those around him, but the entire world, he is forced into action. What we hope to find out in future issues, is does he still have it?
Power Rangers: Green gives off a slightly different vibe than previous Power Rangers stories. One with an intentionally slower pace, character development, and emotion. We are likely to get the action you’d expect, but this more mature and grounded story is one that sets itself apart from the rest of the franchise in a unique way. Having a legendary veteran Power Rangers writer at the helm guides this fresh story into uncharted territory.
Vargas gives the story some grit with excellent illustrations, especially when expecting sharper edges and action-packed sequences. Gustaffo brings something new to the universe, while also giving longtime fans a feeling of familiarity. Visually a new story, in a new time, but still all within the universe we have come to love.
Power Rangers: Green is a good start to a story that isn’t afraid to take the franchise in a bold new direction. Writer Paul Allor and artist Gustaffo Vargas slow things down a bit and focus on Tommy Oliver as the legendary Green Ranger, but also a man carrying weight of the past. Power Rangers: Green is proof the series still has exciting new stories to be told, even decades into the future.
