Blue Beetle is an Enjoyable Yet Forgettable Addition to the Comic Book Movie Genre

Review Overview

Comic book movies have become a staple of the film industry in recent years. With every new release, fans of the genre hope to see something fresh and exciting. When Blue Beetle hit theaters on August 18, we were hopeful that it would be just that. While the movie has some endearing qualities, it ultimately falls short of being a standout comic book film.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle‘s biggest flaw is its somewhat lack of originality. Many superhero origin stories follow the same basic plot and Blue Beetle is no exception. While the film is well-made, it draws too many comparisons to other comic book movies, particularly Marvel‘s Ant-Man, which was a far better film in terms of story and character development.

Despite this, Blue Beetle does have some heart and a fresh perspective. The references to Mexican culture and the soundtrack are entertaining and enjoyable to watch. However, apart from these elements and the solid performances from the central cast, the film fails to bring anything truly new to the table.

A major problem with Blue Beetle is its forgettable villains and heroes. They are a blend of standard comic book fare that is neither interesting nor memorable. The movie’s strongest moments shine in its more relaxed, warm, and loving scenes. These scenes allow the movie to breathe and live in its own unique world. However, they are not enough to save the movie from being just another average comic book movie.

Overall, it’s hard to imagine Blue Beetle becoming a movie that is remembered a few years down the line. While it’s the best DC movie to come out in 2023, it doesn’t quite measure up to the quality of other standout comic book movies. Simply put, Blue Beetle is an enjoyable but forgettable comic book movie.

The film was directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer as the 14th film in the DCEU. Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle alongside Adriana Barraza as Nana, Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax / Indestructible Man, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, George Lopez as Rudy, Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio Reyes, and Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes. Additionally, Bruna Marquezine portrays Jenny Kord, Harvey Guillén portrays Dr. Sanchez and Becky G voices Khaji-Da.

Blue Beetle hit theaters on August 18, 2023.
