When his girlfriend, Becca, arrives at the base of the mountain to retrace his steps, she soon discovers something beyond the dreamy and impressive landscape. There’s a conspiracy deep within the heart of Denali itself — a dark pyramid, silent, waiting. Becca — and the scores of Hooky fans determined to either find him or find some fun — will face death, avalanches… and monsters to find the truth.
Most people know Paul Tobin’s work from his Plants vs. Zombies series, but when it comes to great horror tales his work on comics such as The Mammoth and now Dark Pyramid is where his writing abilities shine. Tobin draws us into an icy thriller that that entwines suspense with supernatural horror elements, keeping us guessing about who can be trusted in this frigid environment.
When opening Dark Pyramid for the first time, I was not expecting what would unfold in the premiere issue. What unfolds over the first issue is a mystery adventure where horror elements subtly creep into the tale until the final few pages where shit truly hits the fan and things get a big wild–pun intended. The dangers of searching for a missing boyfriend begin to seem easy to what Becca will need to face on this adventure. In addition, the people Becca meets along the way seem a bit off and one cannot tell whether they are evil or not and who she can trust.
Tobin’s use of live streaming adds another layer of intrigue to Dark Pyramid, allowing those outside the Denali a glimpse into the search and the mystery.
The story paired with the magnificent vision P.J. Holden brings to life in each panel makes for an outstanding first issue. Holden’s illustrations capture both the unforgiving beauty of the landscape and the danger of Mt. Denali’s landscape. The color palettes at times—icy blues mixed with sharp whites—evoke shivers down my spine even from within my cozy warm home. The partnership of Tobin and Holden truly works on many levels in Dark Pyramid.
Dark Pyramid is a thrilling blend of mystery, adventure, and horror that is brought to life by two outstanding creators, Paul Tobin and P.J. Holden. The premiere issue evokes so pretty outstanding feelings while also leaving you a bit on edge as the final page turns. This series has the making for a outstanding run and I cannot wait to find out what happens next.
