I’ll be honest, when I choose to read Tear the City Down by Andre Hardy, it was due to the attached author and taking a break from my typical go-to reads to read something I knew would be steeped in culture and crime. Hardy comes at this debut novel like a veteran author, bringing life lessons to the pages of the gritty crime story.
Coltrane Davis is at once a knight and a hustler. He has risen to wealth and success, graduating from San Diego’s back alleys to the halls of power through his partnership with Saul Sollman, a crooked kingmaker among the city’s elite. Running multimillion dollar scams with Saul, he has been Saul’s fixer, but now he wants out of the hustle so that he can focus on his teenage daughter’s burgeoning tennis career and finally be the dad he has always wanted to be.
But when the Los Angeles Chargers’ star running back vanishes one evening before a big game, Coltrane is drawn into an investigation of what happened by Saul and his protégé, the player’s agent; the stakes escalate with a gut-punch when the trail leads into San Diego’s underworld of drugs and prostitution and reveals clues to the disappearance of his daughter’s best friend, whose loss has haunted him.
Torn by the unreconcilable demands of the life he can’t seem to quit and the fierce desire he has to protect his own, Coltrane brings himself and his loved ones to the brink of destruction in his quest to free himself once and for all of Saul’s control―and focus on what really matters: family.
Hardy, a former National Football League who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers (from 1984-1987), brings the heat with his debut novel. A level of authenticity can be felt on the pages of Tear the City Down as it comes from the mind of a former professional athlete and one that has knowledge of growing up around the culture and difficulties, to an extent, in the book.
There is this sense of struggling to balance the past and present for Coltrane Davis, in addition to the care and attention he wants to pay towards his daughter, a burgeoning tennis star. The story is dark, gritty, and shows the underbelly of the San Diego’s underworld in a light that I don’t read much about. Hardy touches on race, greed, morality, and a life filled with secrets. Tear the City Down is a crime noir that I didn’t not expect from a former NFL player, but successfully landed.
Tear the City Down is filled with high-stakes action with a gritty edge. Andre Hardy, former NFL running back, crafts a crime-driven noir that takes us to the depths of the dark side of San Diego in his debut novel. Tear the City Down surprised me at times, letting us know that Hardy has the chops for writing a captivating story.
