It’s been over 15 years since the smoke has cleared over the cursed village of Sleepy Hollow from the 1999 film. IDW Publishing, as part of their new IDW Dark imprint, brings us back into this world with Return to Sleepy Hollow. Penned by Casey Gilly and illustrated by Savanna Mayer with colors by Dearbhla Kelly, this premiere issue doesn’t just revisit the world envisioned by Tim Burton, but it expands on the legacy.
A tale of buried truths, decaying bodies, and rotting gods. The Headless Horseman hasn’t plagued Sleepy Hollow for 15 years now, but unbeknownst to the residents of the drowsy valley, a deeper evil lurks in the roots of the town, and it will stop at nothing to quench its thirst for blood.
Ichabod Crane is a man of science and, despite his indisputable brush with the supernatural, has built a name for himself debunking claims of the occult across the world. However, when he receives a frantic letter urging him to return to Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod must reunite with his now estranged love, Katrina Van Tassel, to investigate a string of strange, unexplainable murders. Together, they will uncover the truth of Sleepy Hollow’s origins and the roots that connect them all.
We live in a world of bringing back to life long dead, but not forgotten, storylines in the world of comics. Next up on this long list is Sleepy Hollow. Based on the 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, the 1999 film is a fan favorite and might be one of Tim Burton’s best films. And while it’s been over 15 years since the films release, we now dive head-first (pun-intended) back into the world of Sleepy Hollow.
Finding that spot on where your story is going to land when bringing such tales back to life can be make or break. Casey Gilly had a tough hill to climb, but handled it with ease. Rather than relaying solely on nostalgia, Gilly crafts a story that feels like an organic continuation of the original film. Gilly tells tale of what has become of Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel in the years following their fateful encounter with the Headless Horseman and so much more.
The pacing of this debut issue is deliberate and while moments of dialogue can feel overwhelming, it’s a nice balance of what some might have expected. Not a frighting, jump-scare style comic, but more of a creeping dread one.
The artwork in Return to Sleepy Hollow works seamless in this story. Savanna Mayer delivers a unique and moody aesthetic that captures the decaying beauty of the setting and lurking unease behind every shadow. This, along with Dearbhla Kelly’s purposeful color palette, each page feels like the fog-drenched and candle-lit haunting of the film. Together, along with the great addition to the tale, made for an excellent experience.
Return to Sleepy Hollow #1 is a great addition to the world of Sleepy Hollow. It’s an elegant and haunting expansion on the gothic classic. Casey Gilly and Savanna Mayer respect the classic story while carving their own dark path along the way. Return to Sleepy Hollow is truly for the longtime fans and newcomers to the lore alike.
Return to Sleepy Hollow #1 hits local comic shops on October 29, 2025 from IDW Publishing as part of IDW Dark.
