Writer Steve Orlando and artist Marco Perugini craft a darkly funny, deeply human alien tale in War Wolf. This action-packed sci-fi story is full of perfectly timed humor, alien butt-kicking, and stunning visuals, making for a great premiere issue.
After he fends off an alien invasion, Thomas Bruin goes from a nobody security guard to Earth’s greatest hero! He’s got a supercharged launchpad and no ceiling. Bruin rises from celebrity to congress, then to the head of the planet’s first orbital security force. He’s married into one of the country’s most powerful political families, he’s surfing a wave of endorsements, and he’s the very symbol of human resilience. So why is Bruin nervous? Because only he knows his great victory is a lie. When the aliens return to Earth, stronger than ever, Bruin has no choice but to be the hero he’s fooled the whole world into thinking he is…or die trying.
Thomas Bruin has spent most of his life struggling, with nothing really going his way, that is until he unexpectedly finds fame by defending Earth from extraterrestrial threats. It’s satisfying to see something click for Bruin as he steps into what feels like his true calling, even if it doesn’t go as planned. He feels like it’s finally his time to shine, but things aren’t going to go his way…so it seems.
War Wolf blends sci-fi action and dark humor with a surprisingly human core. While we don’t get much into the depths of what War Wolf will explore, Steve Orlando lays a strong foundation to build on. Future issues promise to explore more about the truth, lies, and the age of misinformation, but for now, this first chapter delivers a strong, impressive start.
Marco Perugini’s artwork perfectly complements Steve Orlando’s storytelling, capturing the sci-fi action vibe with a touch of humor we want in a series such as War Wolf. His own comparison to Ash from Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness: a mix of humor, splatter, and frantic energy, hits the mark. Paired with Pascal Tora‘s colors, Perugini’s lines make for a wonderfully crafted story that was a feast for the eyes.
War Wolf is a great new sci-fi dark humor romp, showcasing Steve Orlando and Marco Perugini at the top of their game. The premiere issue lays an excellent foundation for what’s to come: plenty of twisted laughs, high-energy battles, and a wild ride that makes for a seriously fun read.
War Wolf #1 hits local comic shops on October 22, 2025 (FOC: September 29) from Mad Cave Studios.
