There are horror stories that have to rely on cheap jump scares to frighten its reader, but that is not what makes Find Me Where It Ends so terrifying. Rather, Cassandra Khaw leans into mortality and grief as well as the meaning of living to craft a truly horrifying story that packs a punch in a limited number of pages.
Antigone is no stranger to death. For the women of her family, death always comes in the form of a black dog.
When Antigone’s own black dog arrives, she isn’t afraid. She invites it inside, where it soon becomes a daily source of companionship and comfort. It also forces her to reflect on the life she’s led―the parts of herself she’s hollowed out for the sake of others, and the bone-deep exhaustion that’s hounded her every step.
Her Death’s arrival must be a sign, permission to finally let go. To rest. Because while mortality is inevitable, living is a choice. But a good death comes at a price.
Khaw has a great ability to craft a story that is poetic and horrifying at the same time. Find Me Where It Ends is a story less about the fear of death, but more about learning how to live, even in the face of death. In this case her family’s face of death a black dog. These days most of us deal with burnout and depression, for various reasons, which makes horror stories such has this hit a bit closer to home and allow for it to sink in more than some other tales.
Find Me Where It Ends is novella length, but really packs a punch. Khaw’s amazing prose allows for every sentence to have impact amazing imagery that creates an atmospheric vibe and enhances the overall story. Something that makes a shorter story harder to tell sometimes, but Khaw does it with such ease. The big benefit for this shorter length was I only had to live in the sense of dread and lingering death for a short period of time, as the read was quick. However, the author gets the story across without the need for thousands more words.
The horror in stories such as Find Me Where It Ends is not from the monster around the corner and more from real life terrors such as confronting mortality and emotional wounds. Yes, no jump scares that will make you close the book, but the unsettling vibes through can give you gooseflesh and make you think about your own life and that we will all die one day, so getting busy living.
While Find Me Where It Ends is a novella and short in length, it is incredibly impactful. Why use lots words, when less words do trick, right? This may be one of Khaw’s most emotionally resonate books to date and stays with you long after you read the final word.
For a shorter story, Find Me Where It Ends leaves a lasting emotional impression. Cassandra Khaw proves that horror doesn’t need relentless scares to get under your skin with this poetic and horrifying tale. Find Me Where It Ends is a terrifying and unsettling horror which offers more than monsters and mayhem and leaves you breathless.
