Review Overview

Immortal. Mercenary. Kind of a tool. Meet Simon Pure, the newest Unnamed Hero, created by comic writer Geoff Johns (Geiger, Flashpoint) and artist Bryan Hitch (Avengers Assembled) in Redcoat #1.

British redcoat and all-around rogue, Simon mysteriously became immortal in 1776 after a run-in with the clandestine cabal known as the Founding Fathers, which included George Washington, John Hancock, and many other prominent American Revolutionary War leaders. Since that fateful day, Simon has led a life of adventure and avarice, rubbing elbows (and sometimes fists) with many of history’s most renowned figures, including his nemesis Benedict Arnold, Albert Einstein, Annie Oakley, and many more. One thing they all agree on: they never want to see him again! But what are the true origins and extent of Simon’s power and the mysterious organization behind them? And how has it secretly shaped America and the world?

The first issue of Redcoat introduces readers to an intriguing protagonist in Simon Pure. With his unique blend of charm and roguishness, he is sure to captivate readers as he navigates through history. Geoff Johns does an excellent job of crafting a compelling backstory for Simon while leaving enough mystery to keep readers hooked for future issues.

It comes with no surprise that a key to Redcoat #1 is Bryan Hitch’s artwork. The illustrations are stunning and truly bring the story to life. From detailed character designs to dynamic action sequences, Hitch’s artwork adds depth and excitement to the narrative. Additionally, the lettering by Rob Leigh is top-notch, enhancing the storytelling experience and making it easy for readers to follow along. Seriously, the letters are outstanding.

As Redcoat #1 is part of what promises to be an epic shared universe, there is a sense of anticipation building among fans. With hints at larger conspiracies and hidden agendas at play, readers are eager to uncover more about Simon Pure’s powers and the organization behind them. This comic holds great potential for exploring complex themes while delivering thrilling adventures.

Redcoat #1 is a captivating read that introduces readers to a fascinating new hero in Simon Pure. With its blend of historical drama, supernatural elements, and dynamic artwork, this comic sets the stage for an exciting new series that is sure to leave fans eager for more. Geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch have crafted a compelling story that promises intrigue, action-packed adventures, and mysteries waiting to be uncovered.

Redcoat #1 hit local comic shops on April 3, 2024 from Image Comics.
