Skeeters follows the story of a rural seaside community that is invaded by giant mosquito-like alien creatures. The town’s only hope for survival is a frustrated sheriff and two oddball exterminators. Written by Kevin Cuffe and Bob Frantz (Metalshark Bro), with art by Kelly Williams and lettering by Chas! Pangburn, Skeeters is both comedic and gruesome.
The first thing that jumped out at us when reading Skeeters was the imagery. Kelly Williams’ art truly brings these grotesque creatures to life. From the slimy wings to the hairy legs, these mosquitoes had me cringing at every page turn. The attention to detail in the backgrounds and the characters also impressed me. It brought depth and realism to the story.
The story in Skeeters is a little fast-paced, but it works. There’s only so much you can do to slow down the plot in a horror comic before it stops being scary. However, I did feel like there could have been a little more character development. The sheriff is frustrated, the exterminators are odd, but beyond that, there isn’t much else to their personalities. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it could have added an extra layer to the story.
The comedic tone of the comic is spot-on. There were several moments that had me laughing out loud. It balances well with the horror elements, making for an enjoyable read.
As someone who lives in a state (Maine) with its fair share of mosquitoes, we could easily relate to the fear and dread the townspeople felt. It adds an extra layer of terror when you can imagine the same thing happening in your own town.
If you’re a fan of horror comics and creature-features, Skeeters is definitely worth checking out. Great art, fast-paced story, and comedic tone make for an enjoyable and terrifying read. As someone who has personally experienced the terrorizing effects of mosquitoes, this comic hit close to home. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.
