A horror comic written by Eisner-nominated master of horror Cullen Bunn is a no-brainer for me, but add in outstanding illustrations by Andrea Mutti and its the makings for a cannot miss comic series such as Arkham Horror: The Terror at the End of Time.
Life was all just one big game to adventuring socialite Jenny Barnes. That was, until her sister was abducted by a dangerous cult. Although Jenny thwarted the cultists sacrificial endeavors, and battled the eldritch monsters at their command, the high priestess Abigail Olmstead fled—and took Izzie with her. Tapping horror mastermind Cullen Bunn and horrify artist Andrea Mutti makes for a stellar debut into the world of comics for Arkham Horror.
Even though I am one of the few who have never played an Arkham Horror game or read the tie-in novellas, I still found myself super excited and eager to read this comic book debut. Bunn’s skillful storytelling and Mutti’s stellar artistic ability drew me in from the very first panel, setting the stage for a thrilling adventure filled with mystery and suspense. The pairing of these horror icons gives us hauntingly beautiful illustrations and outstanding dialogue bringing each panel to life in horrific fashion. The atmosphere of dread and foreboding permeates every page, drawing us deeper into its dark and twisted world with each turn.
The dynamic duo of Jenny Barnes and Joe Diamond make for compelling protagonists, each with their own unique motivations and strengths. Jenny’s determination to find her missing sister drives her forward while pairing her with Joe’s experience adds depth to the story and characters. Together, they form an unlikely alliance that is both heartwarming and exciting to follow as they unravel the secrets and horrors lurking in the shadows of Arkham.
Arkham Horror: The Terror at the End of Time sets itself apart with its ability to introduce newcomers to the Arkham Horror universe while still providing a fresh and engaging experience to those longtime fans. As for me, I know very little from any previous story in this universe and I found it very easy to follow along and immerse myself in the horrors within the pages of this comic. Bunn’s expertly crafted narrative ensures that all readers will find something to enjoy when reading Arkham Horror comics.
Arkham Horror: The Terror at the End of Time #1 is an outstanding addition to the world of horror comics while adding to the lore of Arkham Horror as a whole. Cullen Bunn’s story and Andrea Mutt’s artwork create a comic that sets a high standard for what’s to come in future installments. The dark horrors that lie inside this debut issue are just what I needed in a horror comic.
