There are certain characters that have attempted crossovers with so many different universes, but there are only a select few that seem to work each and every time. Godzilla is one of those characters, this time in Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla, The King of the Monsters meets Fastest Thing Alive in a crossover event that shouldn’t work but ultimately does.
When the King of the Monsters and other iconic kaiju mysteriously arrive in the Blue Blur’s world, the brilliant and evil Dr. Eggman will try to harness the power of the kaiju for his own nefarious goals. Only Sonic and his amazing allies–including Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow–will be able to stand in the villain’s way and try to send the giant monsters back to their own world.
Writer Nick Marino crafts a story which has a real Saturday morning cartoon vibe, while also the fear that comes along with an appearance of Godzilla or really any of the kaiju associated with The King of the Monsters. Sonic and his pals find out quickly that their biggest fight isn’t against Dr. Eggman but also a giant villain from another universe. Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla is campy in a way that really fits the Sonic the Hedgehog style, while also giving us a glimpse of the horror of Godzilla.
It’s fitting to see there different in reactions between Sonic and Dr. Eggman with this sudden appearance of giant monsters in their world. Sonic and his friends attempt to find a way to curb destruction while Eggman looks for a new pal, wanting to harness this power. Not to mention, multiple kaiju have suddenly appeared, making for a giant battle we have come to see in Godzilla stories, tossing Sonic for a loop (pun intended).
While I am eagerly awaiting comics such as The Horror of Godzilla, sometimes you need a campy, Saturday Morning cartoon style, and fun story featuring two unlikely iconic characters on the same page. Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla is just that story.
Like the story, Jack Lawrence‘s artwork is fitting for a Sonic the Hedgehog story. The style brought warmth to my soul, while also capturing the size and magnitude of these giant kaiju. I imagine bringing Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Dr. Eggman into a story against Godzilla isn’t an easy ask for an illustrator but Lawrence got the assignment.
Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla is that crossover that sounds odd on paper, yet someone capture the best of both franchises in a one wild package. Writer Nick Marino and artist Jack Lawrence deliver a fun, campy adventure while still giving Godzilla and the kaiju roster that presence we expect. Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla is a fun crossover that proves the Blue Blur and the King of the Monsters are a great match.
Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla #1 hits local comic shops on July 15, 2026 (FOC: June 8) from IDW Publishing.
