Blow Away, written by Zac Thompson (Cemetery Kids Don’t Die, Project Riese) with artwork by Nicola Izzo (The North Valley Grimoire), is a new comic thriller that has us hooked from the very first page. Set in the remote cold of Canada’s Baffin Island, Blow Away follows wildlife photographer Brynne Brautigan as she witnesses what might be violent altercation between two climbers that could be more than it seems.
Blow Away co-created by Zac Thompson, who weaves elements of mystery, murder, and paranoia into the story to create a truly chilling reading experience. We are drawn into Brynne’s world from the very first page and find ourselves invested in her need to find out more. Thompson’s writing captures both the harsh beauty of Baffin Island and the chilling atmosphere of suspense that permeates the story.
Co-creater Nicola Izzo’s artwork in Blow Away is a perfect pairing for Thompson’s writing. The stark landscapes of Baffin Island are illustrated with just enough detail to immerse us in the icy landscape where Brynne finds herself hunkered down. And although the colors by Francesco Segala are simple they add more depth to each page, creating a sense of unease that works well with the story.
Blow Away is a unique story from a stacked creative team. While the first issue is slow to burn, it really sets up what seems to be an intense and chilling story to come. Brynne is there to do a job, but witnesses something that is more than meets the eye and can’t help but look further into it, which could cause issues. The fear of being alone and possibly witnessing a murder is something I would not ever wanted to endure. The wilderness of Baffin Island is scary enough.
What is likely not a surprise for most comic book readers, but the writing by Zac Thompson in Blow Away is wonderful and worth every penny. Add the perfectly paired artwork by Nicola Izzo, colors by Francesco Segala and perfectly placed letters by DC Hopkins, Blow Away is a must-add to your pull list. Also, can we mention the outstanding cover by Annie Wu on the debut issue…wow.
