Review Overview

Inspired by true events, Hunt for the Skinwalker is based on the groundbreaking nonfiction book that revealed the captivating true history of Gorman Ranch – a remote ranch in the Uinta Basin that has been the most significant nexus for the paranormal for more than 50 years.

Working hand-in-hand with the book‘s authors, Dr. Colm Kelleher and George Knapp, writer Zac Thompson and artist Valeria Burzo deliver a gripping and unique tale perfect for fans of horror and supernatural comics.

Hunt for the Skinwalker #1 introduces us to the Gorman family, who have been experiencing strange occurrences at their ranch for years. The family experiences things on their own, as well as together…things they just cannot explain. One of the standout features of the comic is the use of narration as a tool to tell the story. It works well to set the tone for the book and add depth to the characters.

The writing in Hunt for the Skinwalker #1 is stellar. The dialogue between characters feels natural, and the pacing of the story is just right. One of the most impressive aspects of this comic is how it seamlessly blends genres. The horror elements are genuinely scary, while the sci-fi and paranormal aspects are intriguing. Thompson and Burzo have created a unique and engaging world that will leave readers itching for more.

Speaking of the art, Burzo’s illustrations are fantastic. The character designs are well-crafted, and the creatures they encounter are genuinely terrifying. Hunt for the Skinwalker is wonderfully colored by Jason Wordie and lettered by Joe Sabino. It’s clear that a lot of thought and care went into every panel, making for a visually stunning comic book.

Hunt for the Skinwalker #1 is an excellent addition to the paranormal and horror comic genres. It delivers a unique and engaging story based on real events with stellar writing and unique artwork. The use of narration adds depth to the story, and the blending of genres is executed flawlessly. We are excited to see where the story takes us in future issues.

“Adapting the seminal paranormal novel Hunt for the Skinwalker into the comics medium is one of the most thrilling projects in my career. It’s an out-of-this-world true story that constantly builds to new heights and thanks to Valeria’s incredible storytelling on the page, it’s jam-packed with stunning imagery that will linger with readers long after they’ve turned the final page,” said writer Zac Thompson.

Hunt for the Skinwalker #1 hits local comic shops on September 6, 2023 from BOOM! Studios.
