Over the past few years we have been given some eyebrow-raising crossovers, but I feel none have been has surprising as Jay & Silent Bob entering the Marvel Universe. Kevin Smith brings his iconic View Askewniverse characters into the 616 with Jay & Silent Bob: Jays of Future Past #1, a one-shot crossover that somehow felt just right.
Capped, tan American Jay and friendly neighborhood wider-man Silent Bob make a quick stop in the Marvel Universe! But when Doctor Doom decrees these Jersey guys must die, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the X-Men and and a whole hoary host of heroes must team up on a joint mission to save the dim-witted duo from a lethal case of super-hero fatigue!
As a longtime comic book fan, Smith got the opportunity to bring Jay and his silent alter-ego Bob into the Marvel Universe and did he ever deliver. The one-shot comic has more characters than I expected and each and every one has a reason to be around, even if that is only for a few jokes. Smith crafts a story that not only fit the vibe of a Jay and Silent Bob adventure, but also was just well done in the Marvel Universe. A story I would’ve enjoy sans the two View Askewniverse characters.
Jay & Silent Bob: Jays of Future Past is a fun romp around the 616 where the characters mere exists affects the future of the universe and features many familiar faces with various reasons on showing up. With this story you can tell Smith is enjoying the ability to write in a playground of classic Marvel characters all while weaving in his stoner friends. It’s a crossover that shouldn’t work but ultimately does. Jay and Silent Bob actually mattered in this story, it wasn’t just a simple appearance of the characters in a Marvel comic.
This one-shot is not for all fans of Marvel Comics, as Smith’s comedic writing of Jay and Silent Bob is only for a specific palette. The dirty jokes, innuendos, and slapstick moments are not going to land for all readers, but are there for those who have been a fan of Smith’s films over the years. Jay and Silent Bob are the only characters to appear in all of Smith’s View Askewniverse films and now are Marvel cannon. Somehow Kevin takes a Marvel Comic, makes it feel like a View Askewniverse story, and passionately creates a story that is worth the journey.
Giuseppe Camuncoli‘s illustrations are also helpful with bringing the iconic Jay and Silent Bob into the Marvel 616. Camuncoli’s style fits big-two comics, as evident with his many years of illustrating for Marvel and DC. This allowed the appearance of two non-Marvel characters in a Marvel story to feel natural, blending the two universes together.
Jay & Silent Bob: Jays of Future Past is exactly the type of crossover that sounds utterly ridiculous but somehow works far better than expected. Kevin Smith wonderfully blends the stupid humor and heart of the View Askewniverse with a universe he has loved for many years with the help of Giuseppe Camuncoli’s illustrations. A comic book crossover that really shouldn’t work but definitely does, Jay & Silent Bob: Jays of Future Past is all the proof we need that these Jersey icons belong in the Marvel Universe.
