Review Overview

News from the Fallout is a striking new horror series created by writer Chris Condon and artist Jeffery Alan Love. This eerie, zombie-esque monster tale had me hooked with its eerie tone, unsettling atmosphere, and stunning visuals.

In 1962 Nevada, a nuclear bomb test goes horribly awry and unleashes a contaminate into the atmosphere that turns people rotten. Otis Fallows, a private in the U.S. Army who is present for the test and is the only known survivor, flees the secret army base in search of a safe haven—but does such a place exist?

Chris Condon reimagines the aftermath of an atomic explosion, where soldiers are transformed into terrifying, zombie-like creatures. While the idea of nuclear-induced horror isn’t a crazy new thought, Condon’s storytelling truly sets this story apart by crafting a dark, eerie tale that often speaks volumes without needing text. The ability to convey emotions, tension, and dread through subtle storytelling creates a quick, yet impactful tale. News from the Fallout‘s chilling atmosphere and minimalistic style struck a cord with me in ways I didn’t imagine it would.

The artwork from Jeffery Alan Love is distinctive and seamlessly gives eerie life to the story. His gritty, evocative illustrations pulled me into a deeply immersive experience, wonderfully pairing the tone of this nuclear horror story. Through his signature use of charcoal and starkly blacked-out character designs, Love captures the bleak tension and eerie atmosphere of the story. The simple color visuals–or lack there of–intensify the dread and suspense, creating a chilling, horror-infused read. Love’s ability to carry the story without word bubbles adds to tension created by Condon.

Chris Condon proves his ability to craft all types of comics as he lays the ground work for what seems to be a distinctive horror series in News from the Fallout. The atmospheric story got me from the outset and didn’t let go. Adding to the allure is Jeffrey Alan Love’s haunting black-and-white artwork, which eerily pairs well with Condon’s script. This first issue delivered a truly powerful introduction to the series, leaving me eagerly awaiting future issues. News from the Fallout is simply a must-read horror comic.
