It’s hard to resist the pull of a Catriona Ward book, she has a knack for unsettling me in the best way. Ever since I finished Looking Glass Sound, I have been eagerly awaiting Ward’s next move, even before I knew Nowhere Burning existed. It did not disappoint. What the author has created is something truly special and was worth the wait.
Two siblings set off in the dark of night. They’re heading for Nowhere―an abandoned ranch, rumored to be haunted by its former movie-star owner and now a haven for runaways. What awaits could be the freedom they crave. And while they may have escaped the devil they knew, something darker is waiting in the burned shell of Nowhere. Something which asks a terrible price for sanctuary…
Nowhere Burning is an atmospheric story with a slight cinematic feeling to it. Ward pulled me into the world she has built through her vivid settings and eerie, detailed interactions, you almost can feel the story’s creeping unease from start to finish. This feeling was something really special.
Novels like Nowhere Burning with multiple points of view can sometimes lose me along the way, but Ward handles this type of storytelling with clarity and purpose. Each of the storylines was easy to follow and only builds towards a cohesive and power overall tale. Everything comes together in one way or another flawlessly and seamlessly. With Ward at the helm it made it easier to take the chance on a book such as this which might have been a turnoff if not for the author’s way of writing.
Ward crafts a slow-burn horror tale, which she is known for, with Nowhere Burning and this one delivers. The story takes time to build, but the patience pays off at the end. The buildup feels deliberate and setup a rewarding end that was worth the journey.
I will say that I normally not a fan comparisons to other books or media when a book is being promoted, as it can hinder my reading experience. Some of the early comparisons have been made between Nowhere Burning and the show Yellowjackets, including in the book’s solicitation. I can’t speak to that personally, not having seen it, though now I’m now even more tempted to give it a shot. The Peter Pan parallels, however, are more spot-on. Think a darker, more twisted and eerie version of the classic tale, but where Ward makes it her own.
Nowhere Burning by Catriona Ward is a total mind-bender of a story. Ward crafts an atmospheric and immersive story that is always one step ahead, revealing twists that only fully click once they’ve already landed. Nowhere Burning is an unforgettable and clever must-read horror story.
