Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the latest movie based on DC Comics is about to hit theaters on March 17, 2023, so let’s take a refresher on who is Shazam?
Captain Marvel, who goes by the alias Shazam on Earth Prime, is a powerful force of good. Chosen to be champion of justice by an ancient wizard’s thunderbolt magic blast – known only as ‘Shazam’– young Billy Batson transforms into something extraordinary: An Adult Superhero with unstoppable powers! Gifted with strength and wisdom from six legendary figures – he fearlessly guards Fawcett City against any evil that dares threaten it.
Captain Marvel has had a long and storied history in the comic book universe. After first appearing in Whiz Comics #2, his story shifted following Crisis on Infinite Earths, with an introduction to the Modern Age of Comic Books coming through History of The DC Universe #2. More recently name changed to Shazam after yet another reboot for that corner of the world as part Justice League #7.
The first filmed adaptation of Captain Marvel was produced in 1941. Adventures of Captain Marvel, starring Tom Tyler in the title role and Frank Coghlan, Jr. as Billy Batson, was a twelve-part film serial produced by Republic Pictures in 1941. Often talked about as among the finest examples of the form, its release made Captain Marvel the first superhero to be depicted in film.
More recently a self-titled film was released as part of the DC Extended Universe in 2019 directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden who co-wrote the story with Darren Lemke, and stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is next up for the character. The sequel was directed once again by Sandberg and written by Gayden and Chris Morgan, and stars Levi, Angel, Grazer, Hounsou, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, and Helen Mirren. In the film, Billy Batson / Shazam and his foster siblings fight the Daughters of Atlas.
However, how much more time does this iteration with the reworking of the DC Studios film universe.
