Comics have seen their fair share of crossovers over the years, some making the most perfect sense, while others that are just plain bizarre. Archie vs. Minor Threats lands somewhere in the middle. It might not seem like a natural pairing at first, but what better reason to crack it open and see how they are able to pull it off. Oh, and spoiler: it’s fantastic.
Not a hoax! Not a dream! The fun-loving teens of Riverdale collide with the crooked super-criminals of Twilight City in the most bombastic crossover of the year! It’s your favorite high schoolers forced to fight your favorite costumed villains in a story that will have lasting ramifications on all involved!
Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and friends are on on their way to a field trip to Twilight City when the magical meddling of Sabrina the Teenage Witch lands them in the seedy underbelly of Redport, the most villainous part of town controlled by Frankie Follis AKA Playtime and her gang of Minor Threats. Archie and the others suddenly find themselves drafted into both sides of the war Playtime is waging against magic users in her turf. One thing is for sure… blood and milkshakes will be spilled!
What’s funny about this new miniseries is that the majority of readers will pick up this comic because of the connection to Archie. But the twist here is that I have never actually read an Archie comic, strip, or any related material. Sure, I know Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but when it comes to deep knowledge of the characters or Riverdale itself? Not really, but I knew enough. For me, the real draw is the incredible world of Minor Threats.
Minor Threats co-creators Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt team up with Archie writer Timmy Heague as they tackle a crossover that is as surprising as it is delightful. While the setup, a field trip gone awry due to Sabrina the Teenage Witch which brings the Riverdale gang to Twilight City’s Redport, isn’t groundbreaking, it works. It’s a wonderful way, and one that works, to bridge the two very different worlds together.
The story is just as much Archie as it is Twilight City, packed with superhero action from the Minor Threats world and plenty of comic relief from the Riverdale crew. Blum, Oswalt, and Heague strike a solid balance between the two universes, crafting a comic that fans of both respective franchise can really enjoy. Of course, it works so well because of the strong foundation Blum and Oswalt built with Minor Threats and the iconic legacy of Archie Comics.
Scott Koblish perfectly adapts both universes into one stunning comic. Koblish, along with colorist Hi-Fi, captures the classic look of Archie and his friends, while honoring their long history, while also incorporating the edgier side of the more modern Twilight City and Minor Threats. Each of the worlds have their own distinct identity, and Koblish blends them together in a crossover that looks fantastic from start to finish. Not to mention the lettering of Blambot’s Nate Piekos.
Archie vs. Minor Threats #1 is a stellar premiere issue and a great addition to both the Twilight City and Riverdale universes. The creative team brings together two wildly different universes and delivers a crossover for the ages. What may seem like an odd pairing to start, but works so well that it ends up feeling completely natural.
From the World of Minor Threats: Archie vs. Minor Threats #1 hits local comic shops on August 6, 2025 from Dark Horse. Timmy Heague joins the Capes and Tights Podcast on August 6 to discuss this insane crossover and more!
