Kyle Starks continues to prove himself as a strong voice in the horror genre with Devil on my Shoulder. This violent revenge tale is packed with well-deserved retribution and phenomenal illustrated by Where Monsters Lie teammate Piotr Kowalski.

Something terrible has happened. For forty days she was tortured by five men and left for dead — but she will get her revenge on each and every one of them. And it will be bloody. An event that takes her on a strange and violent supernatural path of payback through bizarre encounters with ex-hitmen, sadistic art enthusiasts, and literal devils.

Starks doesn’t hold anything back in this new Dark Horse miniseries. The premiere issue delivers a brutal start into its revenge-driven horror. Not only does the writer create a visceral horror story, Starks also touches on the harsh realities women face as well as the dangerous sense of entitlement some men carry, an entitlement that can sometimes spill over into extreme violence. What is an excellent first issue is also a difficult one to digest.

While, like most first issues, the story doesn’t go far into the story, it does however establish an incredibly strong foundation for the series. Starks crafts a tale of horror that had me gripped to each page, even when part of me wanted to look away. Our protagonist is out for revenge, and for a damn good reason. This series seems to be giving those terrible people doing terrible things just what they deserve in the most brutal way.

For a creator who’s found his place in both comedy and horror comics, this one is not even close to the former. Starks goes dark and violent for us fans of revenge and violent horror stories. Proving even more that we can get some sick and twisted stories from the mind of Kyle Starks.

Devil on my Shoulder once again sees Starks partnered up with Kowalski for another great horror comic. The two did spectacular work on Where Monsters Lie and who better to help tell this brutal story than Kowalski. His gritty linework and heavy crosshatching give the book the dark, unsettling atmosphere it demands. These creators clearly understand what makes a horror story effective, and Devil on my Shoulder is more proof of that.

Devil on my Shoulder is a brutal, unflinching revenge horror that hits all the marks. Kyle Starks and Piotr Kowalski are a horror duo that continues to craft amazing horror tales that are not for the faint of heart. Gripping and terrifying, Devil on my Shoulder is a must-read.
