The next installment in DC‘s Joker franchise hits theaters on October 4, 2024. The sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux has been described as a musical psychological thriller which is a unique take on the DC characters.
Joker: Folie à Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.
Folie à Deux was directed by Todd Phillips from a screenplay co-written with Scott Silver. The film is loosely based on DC Comics characters, and stars Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the Joker with Lady Gaga joining the cast as his love interest Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz also reprises her role as Sophie Dumond from the previous film, while Brendan Gleeson as Jackie Sullivan, Catherine Keener as Maryanne Stewart, Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent, and Steve Coogan as Paddy Meyers also join the cast.
While the 2019 film was created with the intention of being a solo film with no sequels planned, things changed when Joaquin Phoenix told director Todd Phillips that he didn’t feel ready to leave Arthur Fleck behind.
It is estimated that Folie à Deux‘s domestic opening will be $70 million-plus, at least $10 million behind tracking for the first Joker, which went on to shatter records in launching to $96.2 million domestically in 2019.
