Imagine being the son of Satan, and not just that, but you come out as gay. Now your father casts you out of Hell. Even in the underworld, you are not accepted. It might be an exaggerated scenario, yet not hard to relate to in today’s world. Eisner and GLAAD-nomiated writer David M. Booher and artist Winston Gambro plays with this fact in his latest series, Malloch the Damned.
Moe Malloch was living his best afterlife until he came out as gay. To everyone’s shock, Satan threw him out of Hell. Of all the atrocious things humans do, being a queer son of Satan is the worst? That’s where we meet this immortal, grumpy, magical, whisky-drinking, I-wear-a-vest-because-it-looks-so-cool Hell-reject with a wry sense of humor. He’s stuck on Earth until he can find a way back into the underworld. In the meantime, he solves supernatural crime.
You’re not allowed to be gay, even in Hell? At first, this idea made me laugh out loud, but then it left me sitting in stunned silence as my mind computed this statement. It’s a tongue-in-cheek premise that hits surprisingly close to home for many in the LGBTQ+ community. And while Moe Malloch’s banishment from Hell may start with this absurd reason, it’s only the start to what is Malloch the Damned.
Booher takes us on a wild ride of supernatural crime-solving alongside Malloch and his unlikely sidekicks. Malloch the Damned is a thought-provoking horror romp with a mixture of extreme violence, crime noir, and dark humor in just the right proportions. A great horror story is one that takes real life issues and puts a spin on them to push them into the extreme and absurd, Malloch the Damned is just that.
Not only is Malloch the Damned exceptionally well written, but the artwork is spectacular. Gambro blends multiple artistic styles to create a breathtaking comic that delivers both horror and humor. Meticulously painted scenes and main characters share panels with figures who look like they just jumped off the screen of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Steamboat Willie, and more. This mixture of styles gives the story so much more depth and leaves you wanting more. I mean the main cover alone had me wanting to know what was up inside!
Malloch the Damned by David M. Booher and Winston Gambro is something truly special. Together, they’ve created a comic that doesn’t just ask to be read, it demands to be experienced. The blend of diverse art styles, thought-provoking dark humor, and moments of unsettling violence to make one of the must-read premier issues of 2026. So don’t miss out and back the Kickstarter today!
