The first feature film under the direction of James Gunn is about to hit theaters. The new DC Universe (DCU) gets underway with Superman, a fitting start to the brand new universe.
When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?
Written and directed by Gunn and the movie stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl.
The film kicks off Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the first part of the new DC Universe. Originally subtitled with Legacy, the movie title was shortened after Gunn had come to feel while writing the film that it was about looking forward while the Legacy subtitle was about looking backward.
The film is expected to earn $125-145 in its domestic opening weekend starting on July 11, 2025 and a potential global total of over $1 billion when its run in theaters is complete. Man of Steel earned $670 million, while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $874 million. The budget to make this movie was $225 million.
