Marvel Studios‘ next superhero, well non-superhero, ensemble film is set to hit theaters in early May in the form of Thunderbolts*.
Thunderbolts* sees a group of antiheroes are caught in a deadly trap by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and are forced into a dangerous mission that could bring them redemption if they unite as a team.
The film which was directed by Jake Schreier (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) from a screenplay by Eric Pearson (Black Widow, Transformers One) and Joanna Calo (The Bear, Hacks) is based in the Marvel Comics team by the same name. The group was assembled by writer Kurt Busiek and artist Mark Bagley for The Incredible Hulk #449 in January 1997 before getting their own series in April 1997.
Thunderbolts* is the 36th Marvel Cinematic Universe film and the final film in Phase Five.
The movie stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Bob / Sentry / Void, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Geraldine Viswanathan. Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz are expected to reprise their respective roles as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff respectively.
Thunderbolts* is projected to have a $63–77 million opening weekend in the United States, with the “target number” expected to be $70 million. The film is scheduled to be released in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, ScreenX, and 4DX.
Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2, 2025.
