Episode 119: Daniel Kraus (August 2)
On Episode 119 of the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes back New York Times bestselling author Daniel Kraus to the show to discuss his latest novel Whalefall and more.
Kraus is a writer of novels, TV, and film. His collaboration with legendary filmmaker George A. Romero, The Living Dead, was acclaimed by The New York Times and The Washington Post.
With Guillermo del Toro, he co-authored The Shape of Water, based on the same idea the two created for the Oscar-winning film. Also with del Toro, Kraus co-authored Trollhunters, which was adapted into the Emmy-winning Netflix series. Kraus’s The Death and Life of Zebulon Finch was named one of Entertainment Weekly‘s Top 10 Books of the Year. Kraus has won the Bram Stoker Award, Scribe Award, two Odyssey Awards (for both Rotters and Scowler), and has appeared multiple times as Library Guild selections, YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults, and more.
Kraus is also the writer of comics such as The Autumnal, Nightfall Double Feature, Year Zero, Trojan and more.
Episode 120: Steve Lavigne // TMNT Week (August 7)
On Episode 120 of the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes legendary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book artist Steve Lavigne to the show to discuss TMNT and more for TMNT Week!
Steve Lavigne is comic book illustrator best known for his lettering and coloring on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title for Mirage Studios, the first full-time artist on the series outside co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. He is the creator of Cudley the Cowlick, Sgt. Bananas, and Stump and Sling.
Lavigne attended Westbrook High School in Westbrook, Maine with Eastman. He is also the basis for the character of Michaelangelo, one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, according to Eastman.
Steve has continued to contribute to covers for the IDW Publishing TMNT on-going series as well as artwork for Joseph Schmalke‘s Murder Hobo , Shawn French‘s Epic Tavern – Tales From The Fantastical Crime Unit and much more.
Episode 121: Mateus Santolouco // TMNT Week (August 9)
On Episode 121 of the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes Mateus Santolouco as part of TMNT Week! Santolouco is a comic book creator and is known for his work on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more.
Mateus Santolouco is a Brazilian comic artist and creator. As well as his continued work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he has worked on the titles Two Guns, Dial H, Cover Girl, Dark Reign- Lethal Legion, and more. He is also a member of Stout Club, the creative powerhouse group developing original comic books. Stout Club includes Santolouco, Rafael Albuquerque, Eduardo Medeiros and Rafael Scavone.
Santolouco has worked on the main story in the TMNT continuity as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret History of the Foot Clan, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Deviations, TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything!, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder in Hell, and more. Mateus has also contributed many more variant covers.
Episode 122: Chris Shehan & David M. Booher (August 16)
On Episode 122 of the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes Chris Shehan and David M. Booher to the show to discuss their latest comic series Specs.
Shehan is a comic book artist living in Texas who has illustrated such works as House of Slaughter, Nightfall Double Feature, Denizen, Bi Visibility, The Autumnal, and more. Additionally, Chris has contribute to a number of main comic covers as well as variant covers one the years.
Booher is the GLAAD-nominated writer of Canto, Killer Queens, All-New Firefly, Dungeons & Dragons, Rain, and more. He has created comics for Dark Horse, Image Comics, IDW Publishing, Vault Comics, and BOOM! Studios. His all-ages fantasy series Canto is now in development as a feature film with Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios. His LGBTQ-led Killer Queens was featured in the New York Times as a must-read in honor of Pride Month. Killer Queens is getting a sequel in 2023.
David and Chris are the co-creators of Specs at BOOM! Studios which debuted in November 2022, wrapped up in February 2023 and hits the shelves in trade paperback collection form on August 16, 2023 at local comic shops and bookstores everywhere on August 22.
Episode 123: Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum & Tim Seeley (August 23)
On Episode 123 of the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and Tim Seeley to the show to discuss their comic The Alternates and Minor Threats at Dark Horse.
Patton Oswalt is mostly known for his stand up comedy and acting resume. Having starred in shows such as The King of Queens, The Goldbergs, as well as appearances on Seinfeld, Parks and Recreation, Community, Two and a Half Men, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and many more. He was also the voice of Remy in Ratatouille and M.O.D.O.K. on the series by the same name.
However, Oswalt is also an accomplished comic book writer. He has written books such as Batman, Dark Nights: Death Metal – The Multiverse Who Laughs, and JLA: Welcome to the Working Week at DC Comics; Black Hammer: Visions, The Goon: Noir, Serenity: Float Out, Better Days and Other Stories, Minor Threats, and The Alternates at Dark Horse; M.O.D.O.K.: Head Games at Marvel Comics; and more.
Jordan Blum is a television and comic book writer. His tv credits include writing on Community, American Dad and M.O.D.O.K. (along with Oswalt). Blum is credited with writing Edge of Spider-Verse, and Extreme Venomverse at Marvel Comics. He is also the co-writer, with Oswalt, on Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.: Head Games as well as Minor Threats and The Alternates at Dark Horse.
Tim Seeley is a comic book legend and the creator of comics such as Hack / Slash, Revival, Local Man, West of Sundown, The Roadie and more. Seeley has also served as writer for Batman, Flash, Shazam!, Nightwing and more at DC Comics; Deadpool, X-Men, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk and many more for Marvel Comics. In addition to being an outstanding writer, Seeley is also an amazing illustrator.
While Oswalt and Blum co-wrote the first installment in the Minor Threats universe, the duo added Seeley to the mix for The Alternates which is due out in September.
Episode 124: Liana Kangas Returns! (August 30)
This week on the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes back Liana Kangas to the program to discuss her comics Know Your Station, TRVE KVLT, Mariko Between Worlds and more.
Liana Kangas is a freelance comic artist, illustrator, and writer, with previous professional history in graphic design and outreach. They recently released the TRVE KVLT trade paperback they co-created and illustrated with writer Scott Bryan Wilson at IDW Publishing as well as the original graphic novel, Mariko Between Worlds, they illustrated and co-created with writer Matthew Erman for Mad Cave Studios. The trade paperback of Know Your Station they illustrated and co-created along with writer Sarah Gailey. his local comic shops on September 20, 2023 from BOOM! Studios.
Kangas illustrated short written by James Tynion IV for Razorblades, published by Image Comics and contributed to a short with David M. Booher on Canto: Tales of the Unnamed World.
They have also worked on the IDW Publishing / LucasFilm title Star Wars Adventures written by Sam Maggs, co-writing the short one-shot Seeds of Eden, co-written by Joe Corallo, drawn by Paul Azaceta, and published by TKO Studios, co-created and drew a mini series titled She Said Destroy, written by Corallo and published by Vault Comics, and the BlackAF series title Devil’s Dye written by Vita Ayala published by Black Mask Studios.
Liana’s work has been featured in anthologies including 2000 A.D., Z2’s The Final Symphony, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Comic Mix’s Mine!, Image Comics Where We Live, and A Wave Blue World’s All We Ever Wanted, Dead Beats, Embodied and Dead Beats: London Calling.
Kangas has drawn covers for series published with Image Comics, IDW Publishing, Comixology, Oni Press, Ahoy Comics, Vault Comics, Mad Cave Studios and Scout Comics and licenses such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Dark Spaces: Wildfire, and more.
Liana Kangas last joined the Capes and Tights Podcast on Episode 94 to discuss her comics and so much more! They also discussed Star Wars with Capes and Tights in a written interview for the 2023 Star Wars Week.
