When writer Al Ewing and artist Joe Bennett set out to create a new Hulk comic series at Marvel, they let us know it was going to in a new direction and that it did. Immortal Hulk is a smart, philosophical and dark take on the beloved character and we are here for it.
The Immortal Hulk series introduces us to a new take on Bruce Banner who transforms into the terrifying Hulk at nightfall. As reporter Jackie McGee tries to uncover the truth behind Banner’s mysterious path from town to town, she uncovers murder, mystery, and tragedy. This series dives into the depths of human evil and explores the consequences of actions.
Al Ewing’s writing in Immortal Hulk is nothing short of exceptional, bringing a fresh perspective to one of Marvel’s most iconic characters, Hulk. The storylines are complex and thought-provoking, challenging us to think beyond traditional superhero narratives. Joe Bennett’s artwork complements Ewing’s writing in a way that captures the darkness and in intensity of the story. Plus, you cannot go wrong with stunning Alex Ross covers that add another layer of beauty to this already amazing comic series.
Rather than start off this series with an fight against another big supervillain or alien threat bound on taking over the world, Ewing and Bennett tackle themes of human morality, redemption and personal responsibility that is unlike a lot of superhero comics. This series is dark and gritty and does not hold back. The first chapter features the emotional murder of a 12-year-old girl, if that gives you an idea.
We follow Banner’s journey through darkness and despair. His fight between life and death and dealing with the green monster we all know. Immortal Hulk blurs the lines between good and evil and gives us a wonderful look into the darker side of the story. You feel for the characters, especially Bruce, in a way that we just have felt in other Hulk comics.
Immortal Hulk will go done as one of the better series in Marvel history. It truly is a must-read series for those fans of Marvel Comics. It has horror, superheroes, mystery and so much more. Al Ewing’s writing is easy to follow and it matches up extremely well with Joe Bennett’s wonderful illustrations. Longtime Hulk fans and new comers to the Hulk storyline should find something they like in Immortal Hulk.
