Review Overview

The world building begins in Hell To Pay #1 from Charles Soule (Star Wars, Eight Billion Genies, Undiscovered Country) and Will Sliney (Spider-Man) at Image Comics.

From New York bestselling author Soule and artist Sliney comes Hell To Pay with colors from Rachelle Rosenberg and letters by Chris Crank. The debut issue features main cover by Dave Johnson, plus variant covers by Sliney, Mahmud Asrar, and Michael Del Mundo. Issue one hit shelves on November 2, 2022.

The Shrouded College will give you magic…but you’ll incur a debt. Until it’s paid you belong to them. Married couple Maia and Sebastian Stone took that deal. They have worked for the College ever since using their new abilities to track down 666 cursed coins: qurrakh…aka the Devil’s Dollar. Only a few remain. The Stones are almost free…but the devil’s in the details. Hellboy meets Indiana Jones in this supernatural adventure.

Hell To PayLike yesterday’s comic book review of The Ones #1, we are also in love with this comic book writer. Soule has been known for great world building and telling unique stories such as Undiscovered Country, plus his collaborations with Ryan Browne on Curse Words and Eight Billion Genies. Charles can do no wrong in our opinion and Hell To Pay is no different.

Soule’s unique, disturbing and twisted take on Hell, plus Sliney’s ability to give you the visuals of this original twisted idea gives you a solid comic book with a likely metaphoric meaning. The two main characters, Sebastian and Maia, are attempting to pay back a debt before they can start a family. Something that is all too familiar in the crazy world we live in now. Parents putting starting a family on hold to pay off student loan or credit card debt.

Hell To Pay #1 is a well thought out and executed debut issue with strong main characters and a perfect mix of horror, action, and adventure. The series has huge potential and we can’t wait to read more of Hell To Pay, but also the connected books coming from Soule and Sliney surrounding the Shrouded College.

Soule’s has had a few properties opted for the screen with Eight Billion Genies, Letter 44, and Undiscovered Country to name a few. Is Hell To Pay next on that list?

The next issue of Hell To Pay drops on December 14.
