Review Overview

A Legacy of Violence brings brutality and trauma to an outstanding horror story in volume one published by Mad Cave Studios.

Written by Eisner-nominated and Ghastly Award winning Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, Shock Shop), illustrated by Andrea Mutti (One Eye Open, Marvel Zombies Return) and lettered by Eisner-nominated Rus Wooton, A Legacy of Violence Vol. 1 hits shelves at your local comic book shop on Wednesday, April 5. The trade paperback collects issues 1-4.

A Legacy of ViolenceWhen Dr. Nicholas Shaw joins a humanitarian medical outfit in Honduras, he hopes to recover from a recent traumatic event and actually help those in need. But something sinister has followed Dr. Shaw here, something that wants to put his medical skills through a ghastly gauntlet. There’s something connected to this young doctor’s past and the untold horrors that occurred long before he was born.

Cullen Bunn has been one busy bee over the past few years and even more as of late. On a regular basis the comics writer has made hit series, some of which even made it to the big screen. A Legacy of Violence is no different, yet another outstanding horror story from Bunn.

Right off the bat A Legacy of Violence draws you in with an eye-catching cover, both on the debut issue, but also on the fist volume trade paperback. While we don’t judge all books by their cover, something about a well made comic book cover does wonders for the series.

A Legacy of Violence sits right in that sweet spot of what we love most about independent comics, a wonderful story that could be based on true events, but veers slightly into the unbelievable. Even if this first volume finds itself closer to the “it could be real” side of things. True crime mixed with classic horror story is nearly perfect.

The beautiful, gruesome and action-packed artwork from Area Mutti blends well with the story Bunn is trying to tell. The first volume gives us a brutality that is easily digested due to  Mutti’s art-style and doesn’t swing to far into the unbearable. Gritty artwork with excellent storytelling is a great combination.

While comic book creators make books to create the best periodical possible, furthering the story into a feature film or a television series is always a welcome bonus. A Legacy of Violence has true potential for a future in motion pictures.

Mad Cave Studios has been churning out some great titles in 2022-2023, but we find A Legacy of Violence is just a step above everything else. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of the first volume when it drops on April 5 and be on the lookout for issue five when it hits LCS shelves on May 10.

Be sure to check out our conversation with the Eisner-nominated comic creator Cullen Bunn on Episode 96 of the Capes and Tights Podcast which shares the same release date the first volume trade paperback release.
