Review Overview

Adora and the Distance is an action-packed YA fantasy graphic novel that follows the journey of a young woman of color as she navigates a world filled with underground pirates, ghosts, and a mysterious force called “the Distance” that threatens to destroy it all.

Written by Marc Bernardin-the award-winning television writer/producer on Star Trek: Picard, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, Masters of the Universe: Revelations, Castle Rock, and Mata Hari’s Ariela Kristantina with artwork from the stellar Ariela Kristantina (Maw, Wolverine). The comic book was originally released in single digital issues via ComiXology and is now available int trade paperback format from Dark Horse Comics.

The story begins when Adora discovers is threatened by a mysterious force called “the Distance”—an unknown force that threatens to destroy everything in its path. Despite this she perseveres and embarks on a journey to save her world. Along the way she meets new friends who help her fight against evil forces.

Adora faces many obstacles along her quest such as battling pirates underground, coming face-to-face with ghosts, and unravelling a mystery behind “the Distance”. With each obstacle comes an opportunity to learn more about herself and discover what she is truly capable of achieving if given the chance. But ultimately it is up to Adora alone to save her world from destruction. Will she be able to defeat “the Distance” or will all be lost?

While we follow the story about Adora’s journey in the comic, we really are learning about a life outside the journey about a young woman with autism. Such a powerful way to tell a story.

The artwork accompanying this story is simply breathtaking! Each page contains beautiful visuals that transport you into this fantastical world created by Bernardin. His gift for creating gripping stories combined with Kristantina’s art makes for an unforgettable experience guaranteed to keep you hooked until the very last page! Furthermore, Bernardin does an amazing job at incorporating autism into his storyline in a meaningful yet respectful way; making it both educational and entertaining for readers of all ages!

If you are looking for something exciting yet thought provoking then look no further than Adora and the Distance. This YA fantasy graphic novel offers readers thrilling adventures while teaching valuable lessons about embracing one’s differences and having courage in times of adversity. So if you’re ready for a journey full of twists and turns then pick up your copy today! You won’t be disappointed!

Marc Bernardin will join the Capes and Tights Podcast on Episode 88 in March to discuss Adora and The Distance and so much more!
