Review Overview

The comic book world has always been an avenue for writers and artists to express the quirkiest and most intriguing stories. From classic superheroes to new-age characters, the comic scene has evolved into a colorful and diverse platform for creative minds to flourish. Comics have also been instrumental in highlighting important social issues like gender identity and inclusivity. The Eisner-nominated Killer Queens was one such comic book that left an impact on readers. And now, its sequel, Killer Queens 2, promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking journey.

The story revolves around Max and Alex, who cross paths with their previous boss. He requests them to assist in finding a runaway heir to the throne of Sarelia, a planet ruled by a ruthless patriarchy system. What follows is a thrilling adventure that forces Alex to confront her past and challenge the misogynistic society she comes from. The tale is cleverly crafted and keeps readers hooked till the very end.

The artwork by Bradley Clayton is impressive, to say the least. The character designs are detailed, and the visuals are captivating. The use of colors from Harry Saxon and shading creates a unique ambiance that complements the story’s tone. The illustrations are enhanced by David M. Booher‘s exceptional writing, which gives each character a distinct voice and personality. The storyline features a balance of dialogue and action, making it an enjoyable read.

What sets Killer Queens 2 #1 apart is its representation of queer characters and gender identity. The comic showcases a diverse cast, including LGTBQ+ characters, without it feeling forced or tokenistic. The writer handles representation tactfully and highlights the struggles and challenges faced by queer individuals.

The comic’s storyline is direct, not shying away from calling out patriarchal systems and toxic masculinity. The characters are relatable, making this comic an engaging and emotional journey. The creative team has put in a lot of effort to create a world that feels authentic and relevant.

Killer Queens 2 #1 is a fantastic comic book that highlights the importance of inclusivity and social change. It is an exceptional follow-up to the Eisner-nominated Killer Queens 2 and leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment. The comic’s creative team has done an excellent job of crafting an engaging story that leaves a lasting impression. The representation of queer characters and discussions around gender identity is an important milestone for comics and makes this comic a must-read for all.

Killer Queens 2 #1 hits local comic shops on August 9, 2023 from Dark Horse.
