Review Overview

Deer Editor #1 written by Ryan Lindsay and illustrated by Sami Kivelä, is a powerful debut issue that introduces readers to Bucky, a deer who also happens to be an editor at “The Truth,” a crime beat newspaper. Despite his unusual appearance, Bucky is a no-nonsense journalist who will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of a deadly John Doe slaying.

First off, Deer Editor is not your typical comic. Its unique premise of featuring a deer as the lead character adds an unforgettable layer of intrigue to the story. However, the fact that Bucky is a deer is not the focal point of the narrative, but rather, his prowess as an investigative journalist. His methods, quick thinking and tough demeanor are reminiscent of classic hard-boiled detectives and crime reporters. This gives the reader a sense of familiarity with Bucky, while the setting and plot of the issue are anything but.

The art-style in Deer Editor is also noteworthy, with blue tones and whites creating a moody and suspenseful atmosphere that is perfect for noir storytelling.

One of the strongest aspects of the comic is its ability to evoke a myriad of emotions from the reader. From the opening scene to Bucky’s emotional turmoil after facing some hard truths, the characters are relatable and realistic. Bucky’s determination to find the truth and seek justice is admirable, and you can’t help but root for him every step of the way.

Deer Editor #1 is a masterpiece of antler noir. Ryan Lindsay and Sami Kivelä have created a world that is both familiar and unique, with unforgettable characters and stylish illustrations. With its gripping plot, memorable protagonist and moody atmosphere, Deer Editor #1 is a standout debut issue.

Deer Editor #1 hits local comic shops on January 10, 2024 from Mad Cave Studios.
