Hot of the release of his latest Venom feature film, Tom Hardy along with Scott Snyder & Frank Tieri and artist Ryan Smallman bring us a fantastic science fiction comic series filled with blood and plenty of action in Arcbound.
In a future where Earth has become a barren wasteland, Zynitec harnesses the unmatched energy of Kronium to assert its dominion across the stars. When Kai, a rising star Mediator in Zynitec’s army, gets an unexplained message from a mysterious entity, everything he thinks he believes is thrown into question-and leaves him to explore what it truly means to be human in a world where the boundaries of technology and identity blur.
While the names of Tom Hardy, Scott Snyder and Frank Tieri might draw you into this premiere issue, its the artwork from illustrator Ryan Smallman, colorist Frank William and the letter work from Buddy Beaudoin that shine. Smallman’s exaggerated cartoon animation style infuses each panel with motion and intensity. Every fight scene feels truly alive, every expression is capture so to convey emotion and action with a feel of movement on a static illustration. Plus, there is plenty of blood for those looking for a comic that pushes boundaries.
The artistry continues with William’s color palette that breathes life into an otherwise monochromatic expanse of this sci-fi comic. Their use of bright hues juxtaposes against dark backdrops highlighting each and every panel. Adding to this wonderful artwork is the fantastic lettering by Beaudoin which brings the visual elements of Arcbound together in one cohesive experience.
The artwork may standout in this premiere issue, the story falls in line. Each character developed by Hardy is exceedingly compelling adding layers of complexity on each page—all serving purposefully to drive the plot forward. Hardy’s partnership with some of the great comic writers in the industry sets this comic apart from others. The script by Snyder and Tieri is equally entertaining and push this series into the next issue with ease.
Arcbound has an insanely talented creative team behind it and it shows in this debut issue. With outstanding visuals, unique and well developed characters and a story that sets itself apart from others in the genre, Arcbound will have no problem finding its spot in the vast word of comics. We cannot wait to see where this team takes this story in future issues.
