Beyond Real follows the journey of June, an artist trying to find her feet in life. A car accident leaves her boyfriend in a coma, and June is slowly pulled into a metaphysical world where the lines between reality and imagination blur. Writer Zack Kaplan (Mindset, Port of Earth) has done an excellent job of creating a narrative that plays with the idea of the reality we know. The story keeps readers engaged at every turn, and the thought-provoking concept behind it is a cherry on top.
Artist Toni Fejzula and Fabiana Mascolo do a spectacular job of bringing the story to life. The artwork is a treat for the eyes and complements the storyline well. Jordie Bellaire and Fejzula’s use of colors to define various aspects of the world is commendable. They have created something that is visually captivating and at the same time sends a poignant message.
Beyond Real blurs the lines between reality and imagination and helps readers empathize with June’s state of mind. While this comic is fiction, the metaphysical world portrayed in it is thought-provoking and serves to make readers question the very reality we know.
The writing, artwork, and colors are all on point. The comic book does an excellent job of shocking readers with its twists, and the overall message will leave you pondering long after you’ve put the book down. The comic’s use of metaphysical themes brings up some fascinating concepts and has produced something that is intellectually stimulating while simultaneously being visually stunning.
