This month for the Galactic Comics and Collectibles Book Club we read Nailbiter Vol. 1 from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Mike Henderson published at Image Comics.
Where do serial killers come from? Why has Buckaroo, Oregon given birth to sixteen of the most vile serial killers in the world? NSA Agent Nicholas Finch needs to solve that mystery in order to save his friend, and he’ll have to team up with the infamous Edward “Nailbiter” Warren to do it. Nailbiter Vol. 1: There Will Be Blood collects issues #1-5 and was originally released October 1, 2014.
Written by Joshua Williamson (Dark Ride, Superman) and art from Mike Henderson (The Forged) this first volume delivers a mystery that mixes Twin Peaks with the horror of Se7en!
Nailbiter was chosen as it is one of Galactic Comics as well as Capes and Tights favorite comics of all-time. So we were all excited to see the groups reaction to the horror trade.
The book was well received by the entire group, not one person had input that was overly negative. Praises for the unique story and plot as well as the twists and turns people weren’t expecting. The unsettling nature of the story was a big talking point. Many people enjoyed that fact that the book wasn’t over the top scary, but more uneasy to read at moments setting it apart from other comics.
Mike Henderson’s artwork was enjoyed by the majority, but had a few book club members wishing he had gone more realistic and less cartoony. However, the bulk of the group loved the artwork style and was glad not to see over-the-top realism that could make the unsettling moments almost too much to bear.
Overall, Nailbiter was a smash-hit with the book club and most readers are continuing on with Vol. 2 and beyond.
The comic book series was named the Best Horror Comic by USA Today in 2014 and 2015. In 2018, Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment optioned the series for film and/or television.
