Review Overview

This month for the Galactic Comics and Collectibles Book Club we read Wynd Vol. 1 from writer James Tynion IV and artist Michael Dialynas published at BOOM! Studios.

Wynd lives a quiet life in Pipetown – working at the local tavern, out of sight in the secret rooms beneath the floorboards, often stealing away to catch glimpses of the son of the castle’s groundskeeper as he works. But Wynd also has a secret… magical blood betrayed by his pointed ears, forbidden within the city limits.

Joined by his best friend Oakley and Thorn, the groundskeeper’s son, Wynd’s strange dreams and an encounter with the city guard send him on the most dangerous adventure he could imagine, where Wynd will discover the magic in the world around him and, most importantly, the magic within himself.

Consensus of the eight-person book club was overall positive with very little, if any negative comments about the first volume of Wynd. James Tynion IV’s writing, Michael Dialynas’ artwork and Aditya Bidikar’s lettering really complete a wonderful young adult trade paperback that is slightly more adult than young adult. The story is deeper than your typical young adult graphic novel with similarities to other stories, but with a slight twist.

With someone know for his more horror comics such as Something is Killing the Children, The Department of Truth, The Nice House on the Lake and The Closet, it was a nice change of pace to read something with a serious story, but more lighthearted and colorful.

If you are looking for something to mix things up, check out Wynd!

Join Us In The Book Club

Galactic Comics and Collectibles hosts a book club each month to read and discuss one trade paperback. Each month a group of individuals reads the same book and meets to discuss. Follow along as we discuss these books here as well. Next month we head back into the world of DC Comics with Flashpoint from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert.

In previous months the group has discussed Nailbiter, House of M, The Recount, Superman: Last Son of Krypton, Something is Killing the Children, I Hate Fairyland Vol. 1, Thanos by Donny Cates, Wytches, and Batman: The Long Halloween.
