‘Tis the season for a feel-good Christmas story. There is no better way to get in the festive spirt than diving into Christmas 365 penned by Mikey Way & Jonathan Rivera with illustrations by Piotr Kowalski. A refreshing take on dynamics wrapped up in laughter and satire.
The holidays weren’t always so tough for Peter Rockwell and his family, but a tragic and challenging year finds them stressed out and drifting apart when they should be pulling together. After accepting the wisdom of a Santa Claus at his local mall, Peter hatches a plan to give his family the best year ever, one Christmas at a time!
The blend of humor with heartfelt moments by Mikey Way & Jonathan Rivera is almost seamless. The duo crafts dialogue that is witty, touching, and honest. This allowed me to empathize deeply with the struggles of Peter Rockwell and his family while chuckling at their amusing misadventures. A straight ahead Christmas comic likely wouldn’t be my jam, but the satirical tone manages to bring a refreshing take to a holiday tale. We can all likely relate to some of the struggles faced in Christmas 365 and sometimes cannot help but giggle at misfortunes.
It should come as no surprise to many who read my reviews, but the artwork by Piotr Kowalski is nothing short of spectacular, capturing every nuance of emotion exhibited by the Rockwell family beautifully. Kowalski’s artwork serves as a visual feast, enhancing the storytelling through his unique style that serves to draw readers deeper into the Rockwell family’s world. Complimenting Piotr’s artwork is the wonderful colors by Piotr Kowalski that add depth to the visuals. Not to mention the stellar lettering from Piotr Kowalski.
As I turned each page of the debut issue of Christmas 365, it is evident how crucial balance becomes. Way and Rivera perfectly balance a heartwarming and emotional story with satirical humor and the holiday season. I feel like we have a lot more coming from Christmas 365 and the debut issue serves as a fitting start to this journey.
