Deadpool and Wolverine was an extremely great introduction for the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and gives us hope for the future of the universe.
Six years after the events of Deadpool 2, Wade Wilson lives a quiet life, having left his time as the mercenary Deadpool behind him, until the Time Variance Authority—a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline—pulls him into a new mission. With his home universe facing an existential threat, Wilson reluctantly joins an even more reluctant Wolverine on a mission that will change the history of the MCU.
Ryan Reynolds proves once again he was born to play Deadpool on screen. His ability to give us a film that made us laugh hard in the theaters for the first time in a long time is simply wonderful. He paired extremely well with the more comic book accurate version of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman refused to coast along in the third Deadpool film, rising to the challenge of almost reinventing the on-screen portrayal of Logan which is much angrier, funnier and not the hero some have expected him to be.
Deadpool and Wolverine was definitely made for the more in-depth fans of Marvel Comics and Marvel films before the MCU, opposed to the original film in the trilogy which allowed for much more jokes for the sake of jokes. Deadpool, along with Wolverine give a sassy and satirical take on the multiverse and allow us to relive some of the good and bad times of the past 20-plus years of Marvel feature films. The number of special guests and cameo appearances of those lesser known or loved characters allow us to laugh a little at the situation and move on from the no-so-amazing early days of Marvel films.
Deadpool and Wolverine is the third Deadpool film while also being the 34th MCU movie and the fourth film in Phase 5. The film is directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay he wrote with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.
Jackman and Reynolds star as Wolverine and Deadpool respectively, alongside Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Paradox. Morena Baccarin returns as Wilson’s former fiancée Vanessa Carlysle along with Rob Delaney as Peter Wisdom, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Randal Reeder as Buck, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Jon Favreau reprises his MCU role as Happy Hogan.
In addition to the main cast, others from previous Fox-produced Marvel films will also appear such as Aaron Stanford as Pyro, Tyler Mane as Sabretooth, and Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios. Deadpool variants appearing in the film include: Dogpool, Lady Deadpool, Cowboy Deadpool, and Headpool. Also appearing in the film are Toad, Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, and Juggernaut.
Deadpool and Wolverine marks the first R-rated MCU film as well as Deadpool’s MCU feature film debut. At the time of our review, the third Deadpool outing is set to break a ton of R-rated theater records.
Deadpool and Wolverine hit theaters on July 26, 2024 from Marvel Studios.
