Disney Villains Scar #1 is a startling new vision starring one of Disney’s greatest villains, set within the world of The Lion King!
Eisner and Ringo Award-winning author Chuck Brown (Bitter Root, Flawed) and artist Trevor Fraley tell a tale of fire and fury, centered on an enraged Scar, unable to accept that he will never be king – not so long as long as Mufasa and his new son inhabit Pride Rock. A plan is starting to formulate within Scar’s corrupt mind, which will bring him face-to-face with the mysterious shaman, Rafiki.
Dynamite Entertainment have really been pulling in on the nostalgic factor as of late with Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck, now Disney Villains Scar, and we are 100% in for the ride.
While Brown and Fraley transplant us back to 1994 in this debut issue giving us glimpses at Scar, Mufasa, Rafiki and others, the creative team was able to set this comic series apart by adding to the story and a more unique and less 90s Disney cartoon artwork. However, the entire time reading this comic we heard “The Circle of Life” playing in our heads.
No most people never said, “I wonder what happened during the planning of Scar wanting to take over the throne,” we are definitely happy that this creative team did. Giving us more to the world around Pride Rock and allowing the comic series to put the villain of the movie at the forefront is something we never knew we wanted.
While this comic is not perfect, it does the job in entertaining an audience who grew up on watching 1990s Disney animated films and allows us to think back to our childhood for even just a moment.
Disney Villains Scar #1 was released on April 5, 2023 in local comic shops. The second issue from Dynamite Entertainment is expected on May 10. Dynamite will continue their Disney Villains series as well with Maleficent on May 3.
